Griffs v Chimps v Merlins v Griffins
Discussion
Saw a statement some time back which likened the Chimps and Griffs to Hurricanes and Spits. Along the lines of Chimps got the job done but everyone wants a Griff. More Chimps made than Griffs, etc.
Anyway, I started thinking what was the best piston engine from that era, and coupled with the best airframe?
Late Mustang P51D (with the Merlin or even better Griffin) would be my choice. No jets allowed.

Depends mate, I'd go for the Sea Fury, the ultimate Brit piston engined fighter but there are so many others that are good for so many other reasons.
Typhoon for ground attack
Thunderbolt for sheer survivability
Corsair for being the sexiest mother on the block
Mustang for range and all round ability

Sea Fury is great. Don't they race these beasts over at Reno? The Mustangs always seem to win though.
Also like the P-47 Thunderbolt ("The Jug"). Heard it reached 700 mph in a power dive.
I still find it odd that a 20+ litre or so (say RR Merlin/Griffon/Napier Sabre) engine was chucking out over 2000 BHP 60 years ago. Weren't the Napiers a H-24 config and reached about 2400 BHP? Even with the superchargers they were on the 100 BHP per litre money back then. How reliable were they?
