Here is an exchange of e-mails between me and a dealer - am I being stupid here or does this guy not really want to sell the car?

Me
Seen you ad for the Cerbera (’98 R reg 4.5 @ £24K) on the Autotrader website. I am in the market for a Cerbera and need sell my Mitsubishi Evo VI. Are you able to give me an indication of p/x price for my car? It is a 99 'V' reg - Black GSR ….etc.

If this is of interest can you let me have an indication of price and I can come down to have a look at the Cerbera.

Dealer
Thanks for your enquiry regarding this car. It would save a lot of time if you let me know what the minimum is that you would take for your car. I could then let you know what I could do for you.

Me
I have been asking £16,995 until last week when I dropped to '£14,950 - no offers' on Pistonheads for a quick sale - see www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?i=17408&s=231

At this price (being the lowest Evo VI on the market the moment) it should shift hence the no offers bit. I guess the lowest I would acccept as p/x is £14,950. If we could get near to a £7,000 make up I would be interested to come and have a look at the Cerb.

Please let me know.

Dealer
Our car is £24,000, if you got £14,950 for your car that would mean a "make up" of £9,050 wouldn't it? Not £7,000.

Me
Thanks for the maths lesson.

What I was asking is if you are prepared to give £14,950 for my Evo what is the minimum that you will accept for the Cerb.

Hope thats a little clearer.

Dealer
You can't have it both ways. Either you are part exchanging your car, or you are coming with cash to have a deal, you let me know which deal we are talking about. If you get the money you want for your car, let us know. If our car is still available we can go from there.

Me
Lets make this really clear: My Evo + £7k = your Cerbera - Yes or no? Let me know.

Dealer
No thank you. I can't think of any reason why I should give you £17,000(!!!) for your car. But thank you for your interest.

Me
Now we are getting somewhere.

If not £17k what do you value it at?

Now wasn't that the first question I ever asked you?

Dealer
We are now back to square one.

If I offered you £14,950, then £24,000 - £14,950 = £9050 to change.

i cant really see the problem here. If they give you what you want for the p/x, then they are unlikely to offer a discount of the screen price on the cerb. If you walk in with cash, then they may do a deal off the screen price.

Seems to me that if your evo is priced so low, is wait to flog that, and go find a cash deal on a cerb.

edited to add, both of you have been quite frank and it seems the dealer is saying £9050 to change. You want to do the deal for £7000. You are at stalemate. If neither of you wish to move on your position, accept the fact that the dealer doesnt want to sell the car at the price you want to buy. Thats fair enough isnt it? If I offered you my mondeo worth £2k and £10k cash for your evo you wouldnt want to do business either.

So after all that you get to £9k+your car, I'd ask him how much for a cash sale, but as you've both wound each other up before you've even seen the car it's not the best footings for a happy sale

Ah Ha problem solved......
www.pistonheads.com/sales/detail.asp?s=6&i=17752&sc=SZMQ
98 'S' 4.5 at £22k so your £2k up already

Well at least you won't have a wasted journey!

There was a trade-in and finance involved in me buying a seconhand TVR. First dealer comes up with some figures. I say too expensive, whats the best you can do, he says I have to find the extra cash.

So I buy a similarly priced car elsewhere, except the overall deal leaves me £1500 better off.

Take it in to first dealer for a service. Sales guy wanders over and asks me about the deal, so i tell him. Have you guessed what he said yet? Yes . . .

"We could have done that"!

So which comes first, the comission or the sale?

Why tell him that? Like any buyer, once you've named you minimum price he's not going to offer you more. The TVR market may be relatively small, but they seem to shift quickly as a general rule, so he can be confident that someone else will be along soon.

I'd not buy from that dealer. But I wouldn't have given him any minimum figure acceptable neither He asked for your minimum figure you "foolishly" told him and that's what he offered you. He would no doubt cut that price when he saw your car. Always remember TVRs are no different from any car, there are always more cars than buyers. The ball is at the buyer's foot

I think the dealer, altho a little abrupt in his/her manner, acted reasonably here.

Seth, I really think the dealer did his best. I think you are the one that's confusing things. SORRY

As much as it pains me to say, on this occassion you do sound like the furry hand toy. I thought it could have been handled better but the price to change was declared as £9K.
I don't see where the confusion on your part comes from, as you had already said you would accept £15K for yours, not the original £17K you were looking for.
Perhaps you confused yourself £17K+£7K = cerb in your eyes, however on the table was £15K+£9K=Cerb £17K+£7K=no cerb from how I read the mails posted.
I'm surprised you didn't want "mats, flaps and a full tank of petrol" as well
Sell the car privately get the money in your pocket and then haggle, very rarely does a trade in work in your favour IMHO/E.

The dealer will be trying to deal you on a price to change to mask the P/ex price and selling price to avoid any possible objections from you.

If the car your buying is priced right(you will know this if you have searched around)don't be afriad of dealing on price to change.

Although you will only get a trade value for your car plus an over allowance i.e discouunt on the cerby.

If you can get a private buyer for your evo you should be able to achieve aroung £1500 more for it than it would be worth in the trade. Then you can talk purchase price not balance to change.

Good luck

The dealer has offered you the same price for your car as you have advertised it for in the classifieds, which is normally a few quid more than they are normally prepared to pay.

His manner does sound a little abrupt, but looking at he facts I personally would like the dealer to shift a little more, however I don't think they have been too unfair.

Guess a lot would depend on the condition, spec and milage of the cerb in question. If it is top notch he probably doesn't need to budge, someone else will be along shortly to snatch it up.

Given the history here I'd be inclined to go and look at the Cerb(anonymously). If you like it and decide you want it then go back with your evo and 8 grand in cash, show it to him & see what he says. Whats the worst that can happen...?

Wouldn't be too harsh on yourself. With the rare exceptions car dealers are no more than modern day horse traders.

The dealer is the muppet as he is basically saying that he will not discount his price. I would sell your Evo and then go in and tell him that if he will sell it for £22k you will buy it there and then. Then shut up. If he says no deal, give him your number and walk out. He'll be on the phone within a week...

Oh, and if a dealer asks "what's your lowest price?", reply "what's your best price?" and vice versa.
