Coming home from work there was a long straight on the NSL, so I over took 4 cars and gets close to a 40 zone so starts to slow down when there's a huge bang - I'm thinking what the f
k was that? Then 2 secs later another massive bang and the car goes out of control and tries to spin 
I put on the brakes, but OH NO! no brakes! Foot goes right to floor! I managed to control it and pulled over to see what the problem was - I really thought my entire rear suspension had collapsed.
It looks like one of the rear calipers some how sheard off. It took the disc with it which shattered and went into the tyre which burst and sent the car out of control. It also put a huge hole in the alloy wheel, broke the brake pipe and handbrake cable so I couldn't stop. It put a dent in the the upright and destroyed all the thread in the bolt holes that still don't have broken bolts in them
Then these blokes came running up with pieces of my car - which was half a brake disc.
The luckiest thing was that the disc didn't hurt anybody while it was shattering into pieces across the road.
So if there's anybody out there with an old 4ltr 16 inch 5 spoke alloy, let me know - thanks.

Happened with a brake pad of mine once... it didn't look hot but f*** me I didn't half drop it quick!

He was cradling the disc like a baby which he explained was very hot and that's why he was holding it that way!

Ironically if there had been an accident I'm sure it would have been assigned to 'speeding' and in 12 months the entire road would be made 40...

Surely the brakes should still work a bit if only one caliper/brake line is lost due to the brakes being a split system?
I've tried it this morning and the brakes will stop the car from 5mph if you really push hard enough.
It's very easy to say surely, but when you've got a splt second to react and you're expecting a full pedal and it's not there it's a bit of a shocker!

Glad to hear no one was hurt, well done.
Just like to say thanks to all those that have mailed me with tips and offers of spare parts.
I'm taking the wheel of this aft to get a better look at the damage. So I'll let people know.

Frightening experience - glad to hear you are ok. Do post up diagnosis.
It could have been a hub failure - similar characteristics - loss of brakes and wheel trying to part company with rest of car. Destroys the brake disc and often the calliper too (had it happen on the front of the race Tuscan at Brands - you lose steering then too!).
Good luck getting it all back together again.

This has happened to me twice now in 6 years. First time in a tunnel going down hill at 70kph I heard a tinking sound underneath the car, like a steel bolt. It was one on the bolts holding the brake caliper. When I exited the tunnel I decided to pull over and investigate. As soon as I applied the brakes there was an awful grinding noise followed by a bang and the nearside front wheel locked up. The brake caliper had sheard off completely taking with it all the hydraulics. Managed to stop with the handbrake and gears as the brakes were totally ineffective even with the so called parallel systems.
The last event, outside lane on a dual carrigeway doing....well quite fast, when I heard the same tinking sound followed by a rumble through the steeering. Not using the brakes this time I dived through the heavy traffic on the inside lanes and headed off to a slip road. Didn't quite make it before the wheel locked up and I eventiually stopped about 1 foot from the crash barrier.
I have now ordered AP brakes for my Chimaera.
