Oil cap won't budge

Anyone developed a good system of undoing the oil and swirl tank caps ? Both mine refuse to shift by hand.

Hi Tegriffic, have you tried using a pair of marigold rubber gloves,(not pink ones or the neighbours will talk)i had the same prob with a Chim that i owned, and it worked for me.
Failing that You could try the tool that garages use to remove oil filters,and you can get one of these from any car spares shop, but be careful with this tool because you could damage the tank!!

Try a little grease on the swirl tank rim - it works for me on the V8S. Never had a problem with the oil cap - mine's plastic though. In any event it shouldn't need tightening up too much surely?

Try a filter strap on the oil cap, and use a big flat head screwdriver or a small pry bar to remove the bolt from the swirl tank (you'll need to give it a good heave as it will be tight).

If using a filter strap doesn't work then (a) an ordinary kitchen jar top remover is worth a go, or (b) pouring hot water over the offending cap and then have another go with the filter strap or top remover. As already suggested use rubber gloves for grip if trying to remove by hand, especially if you've just poured hot water over it! I have the same problem with my Healey sometimes and the above usually does the trick.

They're not the original caps I don't think. They appear to be highly polished replacements and thus, I don't want to damage them I'll give all these suggestions a go - the rubber gloves probably just for the hell of it.

For the swirl tank cap I ended up using WD-40 and then the flat end of a crow bar to get leverage! Only the first time though. A long-handled flat-bladed screwdriver is sufficient now.

For knobs like the expansion tank and oil cap, a Baby Boa is ideal. It's like a strap wrench but the strap is rubber and doesn't damage the thing being turned.
You can get them from most DIY stores.

Would pouring hot water over them work? The oil cap screws into the housing doesnt it? so expanding it would make it worse, no?
