As some of you will know I have recently joined Pistonheads as we are looking buy our 1st TVR(Tamora).
I must admit that I have wavered slightly mainly down to reliability (The car will have to be used every day). So I must confess to trying out an Impreza STI 300R. As you would imagine I joined the subaru equivalent of Pistonheads and apart from the fact that very few chaps would talk to me becuase I was female (Not I may add an experience I have had on Pistonheads) but I was quite suprised at the amount of carjacking going on with those cars (1 a day would not be far off the mark and no wonder you can't get insured without a tracker).
This then made me think do I really want a car that is going to attract that sort of attention, does much of this go on with a TVR?

We use our Chim every day....... and it will do around 15,000 miles a year......
In reality I do not think they break down any more than any other car.... second hand or otherwise.... they just have a bad reputation, and people like to jump on the occasion when one does break down, and hammer on about it.
For every one that has broken down, I bet you'll find loads that haven't, but people rarely post to a discussion forum with "my car was great today and didn't fail".

TVR's are very specialist, very few are identical.
They wouldn't be stolen to sell here in the UK, as virtually everyone thats buy a TVR checks everything before they buy.
I doubt there is a market for them overseas.
They wouldn't be stolen for Bank jobs etc, as again they are far too obvious.
Subarus are renowned for their power and handling.
They are an ideal get away car.
I expect, as with a lot of Sports & Prestige Marques, there is a market for them overseas, which there doesn't seem to be for TVR's.

Its just the daily trip to Bristol that worries me.
I dunno, I got in the tiv this morning, and Lynn Hijacked it and took it to work instead
As for daily trips.... I work in Gloucester (round trip 90 miles a day), Lynn works in Corsham (round trip of about 5-6 miles a day). So that neither car does all the short journeys, and to share the miles I do, I take the tiv 2 days a week, and the Omega 3 days a week, and we normally use the tiv at weekends....
Yeah, I will concur with the "less likely" camp. I actually have only heard of a couple of TVR's being stolen. You could never sell it on if it were for profit and if it were to be used in a crime - well you can just imagine the description: "well officier, it was this strange bluey, grey, green colour and made a lot of noise"..... hardly inconspicous really.
Vandalism seems to be less also, maybe its because its british and not some Ferrari or the like. But for some strange reason you get less grief. Mines been left in some very unsavoury places before and not had a scratch - though I wouldnt necessarily leave it for days somewhere.
Reliability is the old discussion point again. Get a good'un and keep it looked after and it will do you proud. Scrimp on servicing and treat it like dirt and it will let you down. But that goes for any sports car to be honest.

TVR's have their idiosyncrasies, many of them put there by good old PW.
Its irritating, to start with, but I do so agree with him about showing what buttons/levers do what.

And there aren't that many around. And subtlety is not exactly their strong point, is it?

As subtle as a pig phartingI can't say about the car-jacking it would take most of the folks around my way 20 minutes to let go of the zimmer frame and open the door!
But as for reliability :looking-for-wooden-type-smilie: ours is a daily driver and no problems. In fact I burbled past a Peugeot with the bonnet up this morning.
