In an attempt to make my Griff a tad louder, I removed the wadding out of the exhaust silencer, a couple of months ago. This did make a bit of a difference to the noise but not as much as I would've liked. My question is then, should I have sleeved/removed the two internal pipes and replaced them with solid tubes ?? I have another chance to do this, as the engine is undergoing a major rebuild at the moment. I've also removed the pre-cats as this won't affect the MOT emissions test.

Thanks in advance

Was that you I saw on Friday lunchtime Tony? I couldn't hear your exhaust over my pops and bangs though

OK, you've convinced me, not that it needed much arm twisting. Next question is, who's actually done the job ?? and what technique did you use to cut the box open and weld the pipes in ?? I don't really want to just cut the box completely open, as I'm sure it won't go back together correctly.

I used the 'hand friendly chaps at Austec some money' technique

1. Slice off the rear plate of the box

2. Slid correct bore solid pipes over the offending perforated pipes, leave in wadding as this helps give a deeper note (dont ask me why but i suspect something to do with resonance!!!)

3. Weld rear plate back on....

Or do as i did take it to a specialist and be very happy with the pop's n bang's per £ spent.

Also i rather suspect it's not as easy welding it back together and keeping it the same shape...

Same here, just picked up my car from the parents place after it was delivered on tuesday, I hadn't driven it for jst under 3 weeks. I was trying to take it easy but it was running too well for that. Good job I didn't see any policemen

Yep. Paul at Austec removed the pre-cats and the wadding and left the perforated pipes as is (at my request). It sounded nice but it resonated like a bugger at certain speeds, this isn't too much of a problem with the roof off, but with it on and at a 83 mph it felt like Dr. Mengele was trying to extract information.

Paul then sleeved the holey pipes and the sound is now much better, it's deeper and I have not noticed any resonance at all. It also pops and gurgles on lifting. The welding work is all but invisible.

The only problem I have now is that the car is left in a rented garage and as exhibited by my dawn departure for the Surrey Run V, the Griffith did a creditable impression of Thunderbird 2 launching.

Get it done.

Dave.

I had the straight through pipes done to mine by Offords at a very very reasonable price.

Its sounds Great IMO...

Ask DustyC what it sounds like

Only concern is that you may struggle with Track day noise restrictions and the possible loss of some power due to there not being some much back pressure, not to sur how much loss though

BB, I thought that the back pressure was an issue only if the main cats were removed? After the op, the car (bog standard engine) was putting out 280 bhp and lots of torque despite the pipe from the air filter being faulty, Paul anticipates more when replaced with a silicon jobby.

I am a bit worried about the trackday noise though.

Paul - Where is my silicon jobby?

TVRCC - Where are the trackday dates for 2004?

Dave.

Yup.. when mine (straight through) was noise tested a little while back by Steve Howard, his remark was "well.. no track days for you then"

Mmmmmm... so for the best results then, sleeve and remove the wadding ?? OK, I'll open the box up again this weekend and sleeve the two perforated pipes.

Thanks guys.

Did they remove the wadding from the box or leave it in ??

Have no sound on my CAD station, so I'll have a listen when I get home.

Cheers

They did the whole remove wadding + perforated pipes, put in new solid pipes, weld back up.

It's not too bad in the car but outside it's fg loud. As my mates keep telling me. Mind you, the Chims and Griffs are not exactly the quietest cars anyway. Wack up the volume for the full effect...
