Just got back from Autosport to find a letter explaining my insurance policy is not eligible for renewal. It's not actually covering a TVR any more (although it was previously), but I know Hagerty have a huge following in this corner of the forum, so I thought I'd see if anyone else has had this?

The letter doesn't give a reason as such. I don't know if they've decided my car is too track orientated or that I'm too young (they were letting me renew as an under-30 before but wouldn't accept new policies) or something.

Either way, I'm sad to see this happen as the premiums and service have been first rate.

When you get new quotes don't you have to tell them if you have been refused insurance by any other company before and does it count against you in anyway? I think I would like to know why they refused me?

I've just renewed my policy with Hagerty - no issues at all. The premium has gone up from last year but is still sub £400 so I'm happy to stick with them as they have always given great service and look like a very professional outfit. No harm giving them a call to find out why they can't insure you again.

I wouldn't have thought this is classed as "refused" otherwise all those under 25 who try and get a quote from the larger companies would have to declare this fact (i.e. sorry we don't quote for under 25s). I suspect that (as he says it doesn't cover a TVR anymore) that he now falls outside their "specialist" market and as such they are unable to "quote" a renewal premium. I would have classed the "refused" in those areas where policies are terminated for fraud, failure to comply with restrictions etc. Also doesn't the question on refusal also ask about "special conditions applied" in which case isn't an enforced excess, limited mileage, garaged requirement a special condition?

Perhaps an insurance expert could clarify?

If you've already replaced the Tiv with another car on the old Hagerty policy it would seem that the car may not be the issue; also I think someone has said in another post somewhere that they aren't able to cover under 30 now so maybe that is the reason. Either way send them an email to their enquiry email address and ask why - I'm sure they'll explain.

they havent really "discontinued" your policy as that ran for a year and has now finished - they are just not accepting you as a client for the next year...for whatever reason...

Ok, yes, to be fair, it hasn't been cancelled, it's just not available for the next year.

I spoke to them and it is indeed because I'm under 30. This came as something as a shock as I was allowed to renew last year after they'd stopped taking new customers of my age.

They're recommending Performance Direct as a replacement, so I'm going to try them and then the usual suspect (Flux, FJ etc.)

Just had a quote from them for a Tuscan, and they just won't do 5000 miles annually only limited to 3000miles for a year.

Just spoken to Charlie having received a letter saying they are unable to renew my insurance. I was told that they are no longer insuring post 80's cars.

That's odd, how do they work that out? Oh well, just spoke to Mannings who are £70 cheaper than my last years Hagerty premium. biggrin

Still find it strange that Hagerty are now declining, but Mannings are ok and they use the same underwriter?

Interesting. Mine was definitely put down to age (of me, not the car) but it would have failed on those grounds too.

The biggest thing I'll miss about Hagerty is the low cost track day add-ons. Back in the TVR days I only paid £22 a track day and it's only been a couple of quid more with the new toy. That and the fact they were the only people who'd insure me for an even vaguely sensible price when I first went to them at 24 (not quite so relevant now I'm an old man).

Trackdays are included in Manning's policy (also with Allianz)

I got a letter (2, in fact) from them yesterday, declining my renewal.
I've just phoned them to be told that:-
1) I cannot renew for my TVR wedge as they will now only be insuring pre-1980 TVR's.
2) They will only cover my MGZT-T (under a modern classics policy) if I limit to 3,000 miles p.a. They no longer offer a 5,000 miles option!

So... Any recommendations for an alternative insurer?

There's loads - take your pick from Mannings, Richard Eggar, Chris Knott, A-Plan, Adrian Flux etc etc.

Not strictly relevant to TVR stuff, but I've narrowed it to Richard Egger or Adrian Flux for the bathtub.

If you speak to Richard Eggar, ask for Mary - she is amazingly helpful and a very nice lady.

My twopenneth, renewed with Hagerty this week over the phone, usual nice bloke and terrific help.
What he told me was that next year they will still renew but it will be a different underwriter.
Hope the pricing is the same or at least fair. :touchwoodsmilie:
