Something to liven up TVR owners wet and miserable evenings for febuary, some useless but interesting information.did you know that the first ever F1 race was held in Ireland and also the Gordan Bennett(of the saying) road races also started in Ireland, reason that road races were illegal in England at the time but not in the colonies!
In defereance to the Irish all the cars were painted green hence British racing green which perhaps really should be called Irish racing green. You will be glad to hear that Tvr's have raced for the last couple of years on the site of the first F1 race which was held in Dublin.
anybody else have any little snippets to share to while away the evenings ?

F1 (Formula 1) was created in 1946. The first world championship F1 race was at Silverstone in 1950 (won by Farina in an Alfa Romeo) and the first constructors championship was in 1958.In defereance to the Irish all the cars were painted green hence British racing green which perhaps really should be called Irish racing green. You will be glad to hear that Tvr's have raced for the last couple of years on the site of the first F1 race which was held in Dublin.

Before WW2, Grand Prix racing was to various formulae. The first race to be widely aknowledged as a "Grand Prix" race was the 1906 at Le Mans - (but not the later 24 hour race circuit), won by Ferenc Szisz in a Renault. Before this there were a number of city-to-city races in which a number of entrants were killed (notably car maker Marcel Renault), hence the creation of circuit races.
The first Gordon Bennett Cup race was in France (Paris to Lyon). The idea was that, like the Eurovision Song Contest (!!!), whoever won the race would host the next year's event. in 1902, Selwyn Edge (Napier) won the Paris, to Innsbruck race, so it was Britain's turn to host the 1903 race. However, road racing was illegal here then, so the RAC arranged for the race to be held in Athy, County Kildare, Ireland. The Napiers were painted green to honour their hosts, but the race was won by Jenatzy in a Mercedes.
The last race was in 1905 and was superseded by the French Grand Prix.
Also, it's a long (and fairly wet) way to Tipperary...

;)erm, the hollow in the base of a wine bottle is called a punt.
vague Irish connection if you know what I mean.
Apparently the deeper the punt the better quality of wine inside...vague Irish connection if you know what I mean.

Another pub quiz type thingy is that F1 did not exist as such for two years. The grand prix title went to F2. So all sorts of odd questions can be formed around that, such as: How many GPs to F1 regs has Ferrari won?

Mrs Hunt had a rough cut punt
not a punt cut rough
but a rough cut punt
Now try and drink the wine down to the punt and repeat that
