manifold gasket, to seal or not to seal?

replacing one of the manifold gaskets today I was wondering what opinions are on using a smear of sealer on the new gasket before install?

If you do use sealant, make it's 'cat' friendly stuff

Had a problem during the first few months after the fitting of new manifolds and system. The usual smell of fumes in cockpit magnified by 10. Although new individual port gaskets used it was found that after 300 miles that some of the manifold studs appeared to be only finger tight.After some research found some indication that the studs work loose very easily. if i remember correctly a type of norlock should be used to prevent problems and gas escape. i am sure someone on here knows more and can shed some light. if you are experiencing no problem then ok b ut post seems to suggest that you have concerns.

all the bolts were tight, gasket nearest bulkhead was shot on both ports. used norloks

I use just a thin smear of veryhightemp silicone, and don't bother with gaskets anymore.
