Toyo's and Blackcircles...

Trying to order some tyres for local fitting through blackcircles. 255/35/18 Toyos are fine, however I cant seem to find any 235/40/18's on there site now is it just my postcode?

I got these from Blackcircles about 6 weeks ago. I've just tried the site and they don't come up. You could try Mytyres.com. £140 which, iirc, is a little more than Blackcircles were, but at least they have them.

Which Toyo's are you fitting 888s or T-1Rs? I got two 245/45/16 T-1Rs from Blackcircles just over a week ago for the rear on the Griff at £126 ea, fitted locally.

They are truly frightening, I've got about 120 miles on them trying to run them in, I've been hot cycling them but the back end seems so loose it is quite unnerving. I had a fast run out yesterday and it was sliding the back end through the bends but it was a smooth break away and predictable (predictable in as much as it did it on every bend!) but it was at pace on the straights where it becomes really frightening as the car is dancing around and feels really unstable. I can only liken it to those first couple of laps in a go-kart where you have to give smaller steering input then from your road car, but this time it doesn't get easier

I've mailed Toyo and they reckon it's because I have other tyres (SO3s) on the front rather than Toyos, but the SO3s stick in the corners, so I can only assume it is the Toyos causing the problem. The car has been recently serviced at PPC and had SO3s all round at the time and even with worn out rears the ride was absolutely rock solid and it's cornering ability was still excellent.

I'm now of the opinion that I may have wasted £250 and should have had the new SO2s fitted.

I have S03's fitted at the moment and love them. However my old man has T1-Rs on the Griff and thinks their great.

Hi

The reason that they are braking away so easily may be because they are to wide. If you go too wide on such a light car the weight on each tyre is less and therfore less grip???

Or am I wrong? Genuine question

Wrong! the tyre width is the standard for the Griff 500 and as I stated, on the SO3s it was superb.

No matter the width of the tyre, the weight on each tyre is no lighter, indeed you are adding unsprung weight, but all it means is that with a wider tyre you have a greater contact patch which means a greater ability to put the power down on the road. I have 7.5J wheels on the rear can you imagine the problem if it only had a 5 or 5.5J section on the rear and the power of that 5 litre, it would just sit there spinning it's wheels with no traction!

Dave, did your Dad have the Toyos fitted all round? Did he have any issues running them in? and did they take long to settle them

Have you tried altering the pressures to suit? I think the Toyo's are better at a lower pressure than usual (do a search here).

I have Toyo 888's on the front, so I could keep to 'Z' rating, & T1R's on the rear. I too found the car unsettled to begin with but I allowed just over 200 miles for them to bed in, in the same way you would with new brake pads i.e. I didn't stress them.

After that they have been nothing short of amazing, especially the grip of the 888's

Thanks Bodders it is re-assuring to hear you have had the same 'feel' with the T-1Rs and that they have scrubbed in so well, I'm currently running 24psi cold all round what pressure are you setting to?

I have toyo t1-r's all round on my RX8 and they took about 250miles to bed in but once they did they have had phenomenal grip.

I found the same with mine for about 200 miles, however lowered my pressure to 23PSI all round and ran them in, now I can take corners far far faster than scares me, so feel confident in them now.

Interesting comments re the Toyos as I'm thinking of getting some fairly soon for the Griff. Other posts I've seen suggest that they are better with 24psi front and 26psi rear (or even a bit higher in some posts) so 23 all round with the soft tyre walls does seem quite low so what is everyone's experience pressurewise?
