Wheel Choice and Rim Sizes

Well I have been contemplating changing the original Imola wheels on my Chimaera for some time but there has been nothing that got me excited too much available.

I Photoshop'd in various aftermarket and newer designs, Lenso, Image Wheels, Dotz, etc, etc - and obviously thought about going larger with 17" / 18" maybe even 19".

After watching on screen just how much larger and more modern wheel designs can change the overall appearance of the Chimaera, I concluded that size does not really matter after all (no offence to the boys n girls how have put 18"'s on), and that "small is beautiful" with the retro look.

I saw a recent post on 'aftermarket alloys' with great interest with a huge amount of pages and photo's to ogle over, but the only car that caught my eye was a gleaming red Chimaera with the original Precat Griffith OZ Split Rim Lattice Style Alloys, and 15" / 16" as per TVR's intended size for the car.

Having decided this was the look for me, I then discovered that I had only picked one of the most rare wheel designs and not something readily available off the shelf any more.

Good things come to those who wait, and I eventually came across a good set of the OZ Split Rim Lattice style I was after.

Have just put them on the car last week, (as I needed my rear nuts chopped down to get centre caps on), ooh, picture below of final results which I am more than happy with:

You're right though. Personally, I think that big wheels with teeny aspect ratio tyres on Griff's/Chim's look Bl**dy awful. There may be some advantage in the way they perform but I don't know that as a fact. But, each to their own eh?!

Thanks, if they are what you want I'd wait and try to find a set if you're thinking of changing wheels, they do appear for sale occasionally.

The bigger wheels suit the Cerbera, in my humble opinion, and I changed to 18" Spiders when I had my old Cerb.

Griffith / Chimaera to me don't suit the big / modern wheels and the classic wheel look emphasises these TVR body lines better.

Only down side will be cost of proper refurbishing / rebuilding the split rims which are not too bad now but will need doing in the future.

Can't have everything I suppose........

I'd be interested in peoples thoughts on the Chims handling with big wheels on. I have 18s on mine (not my choice, it came with them) and I find while there is a lot of grip, there is very little warning of the rubber letting go and has caught me out a few times. I think with higher profile tyres instead of my 30/35s you would get more feedback and therefore warning?
Anyone got any ideas on this??
