Anyone know the best way to insure my Chimaera and a Focus.
I'm being told that I can only use my no claims for one car thats crazy. Surely the no claims should follow the driver not the car. Otherwise how can you transfer it when you buy a new car
If anyone has found a (cheap)way round this please tell.

The NCD will be used on the TVR. You'll have to start another one for the Focus. I had the same problem. Already had 2 cars insured with the Pru, but when i got my cerb, one of the insurances/NCD went with the cerb, to another company who specialise in TVR cover. That left me with my wifes car (vitara-but insured in my name), and my focus...but only one policy/NCD left. We had to start a new policy off for the Vitara. Luckily, the Pru matched the NCD that I had. Dont usually find companies doing that. Good luck.

They should give an 'introductory discount' though.

i bought 10 yr old granada and insured it as a classic car, limited mileage, no no-claims. this policy is now on three years no-claims and it's cheaper to insure normally again. if i crash one car, i wonder what happens to the premium on the other?

The other shouldn't be affected. What will affect it, is if you were caught dangerous driving, or some other motoring offence, and ended up with points. All the insurance companies need to know about the offences. You still wont loose your NCD on the main car, but they might load the premium.

I use Aon who insure my Chim as a second car. They don't use no-claims but the Chim is costing me £640 pa, limited mileage. My no-claims is used on my / daughter's Corsa. The other option is the 'introductory discount' which can be up to your full existing no-claims (got this from Zurich for my wife on the Forester when I got the Chim). You can't carry this on to another company though until you've been with them for the required number of years.

Hope it all helps

Cheers

Yep, the insurance firms want as much money as possible, that's the way I see it. I've had problems like this as well. Every car on the road has to be insured by somebody, usually the registered keeper. Makes my blood boil as I can only drive one vehicle at a time even if I own 2. The DVLA don't help either!

Pretend to sell the other car to someone , send off the V5 then just leave it untaxed, uninsured etc. In the unlikely event you are stopped claim you are an immigrant.

Not a sensible idea sorry, but it obviously works for plenty out there.

I was "sold" () the idea that the problem is that whilst you can only drive one car at a time, the other car may sit on a public road and be damaged or stolen - therefore you need to have insurance per car. Totally agree however that should also mean that your NCD can be used on both cars. Have tried various routes (trade insurance but doesn't seem to be feasible based on you will only get trade if the car is damaged, and you can only have one "main" car and most apparently don't cover fibreglass cars!).. In the end the TVR was put on a "modern classic" policy which does take into account your driving history and the daily hack kept the NCD.

Some insurance companies allow you to 'mirror' the NCB from your existing car to your second car. I did this when I bought my 944. Transfered my Peugeot to Footman James insurance and started a new policy for the Porsche. They covered both cars using the NCB I had on the Peugeot

Hmmm ... When we looked at insurance costs on a Tiv (and how to best insure it) then the best we found was the car being insured by my wife with Direct Line with me as named driver. She is already insured with them and they have suggested that they could use her (full) no-claims on a Tiv and give her the equivalent "Discount" on her daily car which would then be turned into a no-claims bonus after a year...

Classic line - been with them for 4 years - ie since the car was 10 years old.

I use ClassicLine for my cars, however the actual insurance co. (ie not the broker) that covers the TVR had stopped taking multi-car policies in January, so I had to take out a separate policy for the Lotus, which of course has no NCD. Come September, when the TVR policy needs renewing, I can transfer it to the Lotus policy and swap the NCD over as well!
I'm 40, 3 points, no claims; the TVR is an '87 390SE, Thatcham Cat.1, garaged, 3000 miles limit, protected NCD: £258... plus £15 to add Julie to the policy for the remaining months.
The Lotus is an '84 Esprit, no alarm required (though one is fitted), kept outside, 3000 miles limit: £117 for both of us for a year.

Hardly an expensive hobby...

When I insured my Tusc with Direct line, I thought it pointless to have two lots of NCD with my name on, so I shifted my 60% NCD from the Audi onto the TVR. Then 'gave' the wife the A4. As she'd never had her own insurance, always being a parasite, erm... I mean, named driver on my policy, it was a nice surprise to find she was given a 30% NCD from scratch. Apparently it was because she's already established a driving history - albeit she could've done so without touching a steering wheel, and the bonus 30% was a to encourage new business.
Direct line are fine for day-to-day insurance, but I'll have to arrange separate cover for any track related activity.

I'm with Royal and Sun Alliance (Brokers are Sunninghill) and they 'Mirrored' the Full NCD I had on my Laguna, so my 4.5 Chim costs me £486 !!!

Agreed.

Classic-Line "mirrored" my NCB on tintop. My wife made me phone back to ensure there was no mistake - and there wasn't!

So Classic-Line, and you'll be

Unfortuantely they arent doing this anymore Called to ask recently.

But other insurers out there are. Phone around, there are a few.
Tescos is one of them.
