Assuming that you aren't a troll, and unaware of school holiday dates...

If your Dad meant that the best cheap, reliable, good handling, FE/RWD convertible was the MX-5, he'd have a good case.

I think his dad has a good point. We had a mx-5 mk1 for years, easy to look after, cheap to run, lots of spares available good fuel economy and felt like a little go-kart. A great everyday car.

Just sold it and bought a new 2.0 mx5 sports tech with the electric folding roof. Sorry we were talking about wife's cars weren't we?

But to define best you need to decide your criteria really. I mean there's softtop audi R8's, Ferrarri's etc
