Chimaera Exhaust Modification

Hi all
Just looking for a bit of advice please.
I am told by a good source that I can have my rear silencers cut open, a pipe (or sleeve) put through and the silencer then resealed so that in effect they aren't doing anything because the exhaust gases can't pass through the sleeve. Apparently, this can be reversed if required.
I have spoken to SFR Engineering in Stockport who unfortunately only do a modification to the first, central silencer for about £250.
So does anyone know who does the above and how much it might cost? I hear Jools may be the man to speak to, but is he anywhere near Cheshire? Also, has anyone had it done themselves and if so what do you think - are you pleased with the results, is there anything I should be aware of (e.g. will I fail an MOT?), will I get more/less/the same power?

One blip on the throttle and mine was booked. I doubt there are any gains in performance certainly none very noticable but go through a tunnel or a small town, especially with 40 more TVR's ala Brighton Burble and the sound is unbelievable. Oh yes, If you acclerate then lift off slightly you can make crack and pop on the overrun

Definately worth doing but, having done this job myself, I can't believe how much garages/dealers are charging to do it. It took me about an hour and a half, including removing and refitting the exhaust and that's with the car on axle stands, not on a nice four poster. The two pipes to replace the ones in the box cost a fiver, so £230-250 is one hell of an hourly rate, even if it takes two hours. Maybe I'm in the wrong business !!

A friend and myself did this,
..it cost a very similar amount to the "wixer special", apart from buying some new stainless for the ends of the donor exhaust which had been damaged (£15 for 2x14ins length....impressive or what?), this allowed retention of the original item, in case as I lost the 30 bhp that some (reliable)quarters were telling me would be lost.
Even though the car was part way through a brake upgrade and was on four axle stands the friend insisted I start the chim up ....cos he needed the fix!

Over the power loss, I have noticed nothing, however this is not to say that there is non.
Oh yeah it does sound v nice too...I guess I will be mostly removing the cats next then!

You should have sacked the decorating and come to the tunnels meet yesterday - you could have had a listen to mine then!!
Get yourself across to JP exhausts at macclesfield - they'll do the job for £120.You can have the pipes either half or fully sleeved - I don't know what the first option sounds like,but,I can certainly recommend the second
(by the way,you've only got one box on the system anyhow)

I've never done a proper back to back comparison, however of all the cars on the rollers there is much more variation in engine builds than there is from an exhaust silencer swap .. I would say there's precious little difference if any at all .. but can't give you a direct back to back set of figures.

Thanks Jools. The reassurance on the exhaust mod is enough for me - as long as I'm not likely to see a drastic drop I'm fine with it.
So, what are your opinions on engine mods then - what will give me the biggest boost for the least cost on anotherwise standard car? Mark Adams chip? Performance filter? Rolling road tune? None of the above?
Driver training will give you the best increase in performance than any engine mods!
Not trying to be rude or anything, but most people will benefit from training to help you get the most out of the car you already have - if you ever see a profesional driver in a car you will know what I mean, they can run rings round fast cars with something that is a lot "slower"

Agreed. I am very aware that I need better driving skills. However, I don't have the time for the training at the moment so this will have to do for the time being.

282bhp at the wheels would be outstanding for a standard 5ltr! I suspect you mean 282bhp corrected at the flywheel which is still above average.
