TVR - Annual Mileage?

Hi all,

Having spotted something special at the TVR garage yesterday, I am just getting insurance quotes for a TVR. It will be my first ever “second car” which I will use for social use only. I am not sure how many miles I will be expecting to do. I believe that she will be in the garage for the winter months and that I will go for some nice drives out on summer Sundays. I am not expecting to do any major Euro tours in year 1.

How many miles should I put down on my insurance quotes for this scenario? 5000?

Any insurance tips/info appreciated.

Really does vary, but in a similar situation to you, I am looking at a similar sort of mileage. I am on a classic car policy so limited to about that, or maybe 4000, would need to check.

I always go for 5000 miles on the insurance.

My thinking is, it's not a lot more cost than 3000 and 5000 works out at about 100 miles a week.

I did ask what happens if I get close to the mileage limit and was told I could phone up and add some more miles, at an extra premium of course.

My Chimaera is on a 6000 mile clasic policy. So i try to keep it to about 500 miles a month, which is a few decent runs out and a day / event out every month. Seems to be about right so far.

I have run a classic car policy for a few years and have never done more than 3000 miles in a year in old triumphs. I have had the TVR since Sept 09 and have probably done 5000 already

When I first bought mine I put it on a 3000 mile limited policy as I though that would be sufficient. I quickly found out that taking the long way to the shops just 'because' and making excuses just to go out for a drive soon racks up the miles. Go for 5000.

I insured mine for 6000 miles initially, increased it to 7000 this year as I hit the 6000 mark a little early last year !!

eta. mine is a weekend car too, not used for anything but fun.

Just renewed mine for 5000.(only about 70 quid more than 3000)

3000 last year was not enough, i always kept going out in it with no real place to go, just for the driving pleasure, soon racked up 3000 miles with no major trips anywhere.

This is my first year of TVR ownership and I insured my Grif for 5000 miles. I exceeded that in nine months and have now upped it to 7500 miles, this being the next mileage band that the insurance company would quote. It only cost an extra £59 to add this, which isnt bad considering that its half as much again as the existing policy mileage.

Whatever you decide to do regarding mileage, its not going to bankrupt you if you have to increase it during the year. You also have the option to SORN it if its getting towards winter and this co-incides with your mileage limit as well.

Insure it, drive it, grin lots

I was in a similar position when I got my first TVR. Went for 3000 miles initially but soon exceeded that. Since then have been on 5000 miles and although I've pretty much used that up every year, I've never exceeded it.

BTW - you could start a whole new thread on this, but my advice would be to think hard about totally laying up over winter. In my experience, TVR's don't respond all that well to a lack of use. Even if you have to wait for a decent winters day, it's worth giving them a gentle run out.

Anyway, whatever you decide I'm sure you'll love it

Mines a weekend only car and I've just hit 6000 miles since October last year - very glad I went for a 10k annual limit now!

6000 miles, same interval as service, gave me a holiday around Scotland and a trip out pretty much every weekend and a few during the week too, 500 miles short when gearbox went bang.

Mrs BC uses our Chim 500 as an every day driver. Bought it new in 2002 and now up to 65,000 miles.

Both my Chimaera and and now my Tuscan had/have unlimited mileage insurance - and I've averaged 12,000 miles a year in both of them, no point restricting your enjoyment

True but it wasn't that enjoyable in the January snow & ice!!!
