You could go down the other route of just having the insides of the rear silencer removed. I got Webbs to do this for me when it was in having a Ford Focus extracted from the passenger door last year. It now has a lovely 60s muscle car rumble at tickover, is genreally louder and I get a good boomy resonance at around 3800rpm.
Ask Tiny what it sounds like, for a second opinion.
I think it cost around £180 to have done. There is no decibel limit come MOT time, and it's not so loud that they would consider it 'excessive'.
For track days I've bought a pair of ACT track day silencers, for about the same money again.

Just had a run out driving behind Wavey whos had the JP treatment on his griff and I can say it sounds awesome.
Definately the way to go. Will be booking the purple peril in at JP soon.

Ok maybe my way of doing it is more expensive, but I ended up with an exhaust with a lifetime guarantee, for as long as I have the car anyway (which is gona be a long time). Plus I still have my original exhaust which is in really good nick for use on track days etc.

normally that would work quite well, except isnt the standard exhaust stainless steel too? so it should last just as long... the only good reason would be as you say... for trackdays it's nice to have a standard exhaust as the pipe swapping means that even those add-on silencers may not be enough.
I'm not a metallurgist but I do know that just because it's non-magnetic doesn't mean it will last longer.

DUPLEX stainless steels are used where combinations of higher strength and corrosion resistance are needed. They have a mixed structure of austenite and ferrite, hence the term "duplex". They are not hardenable by heat treatment.
PRECIPITATION HARDENING stainless steels, like the martensitic types, can be strengthened (ie hardened) by heat treatment. The mechanism is metallurgically different to the process in the martensitic types. This means that either martensitic or austenitic precipitation hardening structures can be produced.
"Super" austenitic or "super" duplex grades have enhance pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared with the ordinary austenitic or duplex types. This is due the further additions of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen to these grades

Quinny - I just copied the info from the S/S assoc web-site. All I know is there's no such thing as "stainless" steel - i.e. they will all "stain" to some degree at some time. There are alloys which are more prohibitive to oxidation (rust) than others, but it depends how you test it. You are probably right about the JP system if it's still as shiny as when you fitted it after 18 months. That's a valid real-world test!

BTW the original is probably just as shiny underneath that 'coating'. A friend of mine took his manifolds off and the pipes into the cat and polished them up like new! But they soon tarnished with the heat. Must have taken him ages thou'.
