I have read that more Police services have signed up for the cash for cameras scheme. I personally cannot believe that they save lives as I have witnessed two pile ups because of people slaming on the anchors when they spotted them, you can picture the rest!!
What worries me is that 90% of the people I have ever spoken to about speed cameras see them as an intrusion on private matters.
So if the majority of people don't want them why do we have them? Stealth tax is the answer.
I am of the thinking that measure should be taken by the general road using public to limit thier efectivness at producing a reliable revenue for the government!
So Park high vans in front of them to block any view they may have or if you can some other method.

I worked in accident research for a while and whilst I didn't look specifically at speed cameras, I know others did. Personal view is that the majority of those I've seen are not in accident blackspots, but are in revenue generating spots. Typical example would be just after the dip in a long downhill section, (such as on the A30 in Cornwall). I'm reasonably sure that my personal opinion is in agreement with various reports I've seen in the press of late..
Having said that, speed per se is not anywhere near as bad as having a bunch of vehicles all travelling at radically different speeds on the same section of road. Most people will have suddenly realised at some stage that the old banger in front of you on the motorway is only doing 45mph and then had to slam on the brakes/pull out. I know you should be looking ahead, but the point is the brain is habituated to moving at 70mph and is expecting others to be doing the same..
That said, if you speed and crash, its going to hurt you and anyone you hit more than if you are going slowly..
Reminds me of the time my boss rearended another car at a known blackspot a mile from work. Came into the office and said something along the lines of thats always happening there. Maybe we should be tougher about who we give licenses to? (Minor personal rant over with now..)

I always thought that to be a Cornish put down, not a Devonian one?
The West country must love the tourists, not only do they keep everybody employed but they now pay for the police as well

They'll have to bring their own water next
