Hi all,

I know I should probably post this in General Gassing, but it's so noisy in there, and I don't have time to check that forum and continue to earn a living!

A friend had his car serviced by Audi, and when he got it back they had lost the service book. So now he has a car which has full Audi service history, but no proof of this. What is his position legally?

My take on it is that they owe him the difference in value between a car with full service history and a car with none - this amounts to about £3000... Anyone got any experience of this?

Thanks!

Dobbo

I don't know the legal position, but VAG have centralised service records. I would think that they ought to be able to stamp up a new book and provide a letter confirming the situation if you make a fuss

I bought a porsche 944 with no service history then contacted the garage that supplied the car when new, paid £50 and they stamped up a brand new book for me and photocopied all the invoices as well..

Job Done

Added £1500 to the value of the car..

As Margo mentioned - VW / Audi have had computerised records for years now and you can simply request them at no expense. If the dealer cant do it (they can but might get shirty) then just phone up VW and they will sort it out for you. Oh, you do need to prove that you have the car, but this usually a case of getting the VIN and engine number as well as some pertinent information about it - just to prevent people just calling and getting a full service history for a car!!!

Its not a problem. Had a few VW / Audis over the years and never got a stamp in the book - just before the car was to be sold / handed back to the lease company, I got a print out of the service history..... details everything rather than what they put on the customer letter - which is nice. Works a treat and never had a problem with it... no need to get legal and certainly no need to look at compensation...

Spot on. Shouldn't get that far regarding 'legal' arguments. They will have all the history of the car on their computers. They should provide you with a replacement. If not...take it up with VAG UK direct.

thanks for the replies - the legal thing was never a desired option (how could it be against VAG!), and it sounds like it wont be necessary in any case...
