Private plates

Hi all,

Despite the various negative PH threads on private number plates, I am considering getting one for the TVR. I have a couple of questions and was hoping that the “PH massive” will have some answers for me!

Would the insurance company increase the premium if I get a private plate? Would that depend on what the plate is? (i.e. something like “R4CE ME” might increase premium but “JOHN 45” would not?). It is on a modern classics policy if that makes a difference.

Also, my tax is due next month. If I get a new tax disc registered against my old plate, what is the process for getting the tax associated with a new plate that I might get in a couple of months time? Would I lose some money in the car tax system if I have to switch plates mid tax term?

I am looking at plates on the DVLA site as some of the other sites look a bit dodgy. Any recommended sites that you have used?

And finally, the older pre-“R reg” plates that include “TVR” seem to be at a premium. Can you guys give me some inspiration for plates that would match the car? (R Reg Formula Red Chimaera 500)

Sorry for all the questions, but I have never sourced a private plate before. Any advice or help would be appreciated!

A Private Plate will not increase your insurance premium as it is only an identification number for the vehicle, it is not taken into account by the underwritters. If you change you plate mid policy the insurance company will charge an admin fee (normally around £15) as they will need to send you out ammended policy documents reflecing the new reg.

You will not lose any money on the tax as the DVLA will change your tax disc as part of the transfer fee you pay to the DLVA to put the plate on the vehicle. You will receive a new tax disc exactly the same as you original one with the V5 when they send it out.

I would recommend sticking with buying a plate from the DVLA site as they include the transfer fee.

DVLA are easy to deal with and you can type in whatever reg number you want and see it it is available. As mentioned above the cost includes the transfer fee which I thnk is £80.

Last time I did this I went to my local DVLA office in Worcester wher they dealt with everything over the counter. Issueed a relacemnet tax disc on the spot and sent the registration document away for changing.

They were good enough to remind me to inform the insurance company straight away, which I did whilst I was there. I went home and put the new plates on the car, simple as that.

Mine was an R reg, 400 bur R400 PLS didn't sound as good as P400 PLS.
I think it cost £250.

one thing i noticed when i bought was a lot of places were working from the same database as DVLA, however although they listed at same price or in a couple of cases about £5 lower, they then added VAT on top, the dvla price is incl VAT so these places were 17.5% more expensive.

one of the sites though (newreg i think) had a much better search system, like a matrix - so i used that and bought from DVLA direct.

i did it when you could wander into a DVLA office and transfer same day - not sure you can do this any more.

however: they wrote and stamped my MOT certificate to update it to my plate

They gave me a new tax disk with the new plate - dont so it just before your current disk expires! as

they keep your V5 and send you a new one - mine took a couple of weeks.

my insurance company charged an admin fee for a new certificate, but there was no increase in premium.

Yes, this is what they did with mine about 9 years ago too. They stamped the MoT with a big rubber stamp that said the registration mark had changed and wrote the new one in biro in a space the stamp created.
They also issued a new tax disc. I can't remember what they did with the V5 so they probably did what you said and sent it away.

I too have heard you can't do it in person any more. There's progress for you.

to be fair the queues were huge, even if you got there 1/2 hour prior to opening you were looking at an hour wait. when i got to the desk they took about 15-20 mins to deal with me. iirc i was something like 15 in the queue and at opening time there were another 15 ish behind me - when i left an hour ish after opening there must have been 50 or 60 people there.

no idea what the others were there for or how long each tool but at the rate i saw i'd hate to get there in the afternoon!

its not like plate transfers cant be done by post, so i can see why they leave the face-to-face stuff for where it's required.

To be honest, I set apart the entire day just like I would the passport office, so I was pleasantly surprised to only queue for half an hour or so and to be processed in 20-odd mins. I don't recall precisely how long it was (it was 9 years ago after all) but it was in that ballpark.

i understand where you are coming from and i did similar, but if you're a regular pleb with an issue where you need to speak with someone to sort an issue that cant be done via a simple form, it must be pretty frustrating to get there and find a huge wait to be seen.
