Peter I take it you've been out playing today and are v pleased with the SO3's then
Quick question for you, do you still run 205/55/15's all round on the original wheels? As I've been considering (ie they'll need changing soon) putting 225/55 on the rear to keep it from squealing myself, any experience/comments in this area? I'm assuming that the same on the front would be a non starter (steering weight, wheel arch fouling etc).

I'm running 225 on 16" rims all round, which seems to be optimal for the 7.5" rim width. The 15" rims are half an inch narrower and 205 fits nicely. You can stretch up to 225 on the 15" rims and up to 245 on the 16" but in my experience you get hardly any gain in contact patch width and the sidewall distortion can be a problem under heavy cornering.

According to folklore,
The optimum tyre size for a given wheel is 1" wider tyre for the rim, although you can go to 1.5" wider before handling starts to deteriorate, i.e. 7.5J" rim = 8.5" tyre which converts to a 215. If the 15" rim is 7J width, then the optimal tyre would be a 205. If you wanted to use a 225 tyre, the ideal rim width would be 8J.
Confused?
Jas.

The main reason for asking is that I rather like the way the current tyres (RE71's) fill the wheel arches. If I've got to change to SO3's next time I was hoping that by going to the 225/55 the tyre wall would have the same height as the 205/60, and hence fill the wheel arch as PW intended. Unless I can still get RE71's which in themselves are not bad tyres, but I would have liked to feel/see the difference against a more modern tyre.
Any more pointers??

Harry W,
It isn't always that simple unfortunately. You can have 2 different 205 tyres from 2 different manufacturers and the rolling radius could still be different due to tread block / compounds, etc...
Before you switch tyre profiles / sizes, check with your insurance company. You know how insurance companies can be, and in the event of an accident they could easilly turn around and say "tough luck mate, you had the wrong tyres fitted".

Cheers, just a thought really, if RE71's are still available then I'll probably stick with them, as you say they were the standard fit and IMHO not a bad tyre.
Micheldever is that up the M3 before Basingstock??? what sort of prices for the bulk buy (4).

Harry,
Thats the place, off the A303 at Micheldever Station. Their web site is www.micheldever.co.uk
I paid £317 for four inc balancing with the posh 'hidden' weights.
I had them on the S3 and now on the V8S and like them. Beware the RE720 which someone with a V8S was sold as these are not Z rated which you need for the V8.
Cheers,
JSG

VMT, good price for all in, not too far to go from here. Aware of the 720 saga and S's, it always amazes me the amount of peeps that don't actually look at the tyres fitted to their own cars.
