As the clocks are about to be put forward, the salt has gone, frogs are mating etc etc, I thought it was time to end my 350i Wedge's hibernation. 
Six months road tax would suffice, so off I go clutching my V10, registration document, MoT, insurance certificate and a cheque for £88.00, this being the figure shown on the tax renewal for my daily driver, Mitsubishi Galant. I was somewhat miffed 
to be told that, 
"Oh no, that is the rate for the taxation class Petrol Car. Your car is in the taxation class Private/Light Goods (PLG), so that will be £90.75 for 6 months". So, can someone explain why a "Petrol" car costs less to tax than a Petrol driven car? Is it me? 
Finished? I don't think so! Next the kind lady says I have filled in the V10 incorrectly.
I should have included /LIGHT GOODS after PRIVATE. Then, as it is now in the PLG category I must also show the cc... Next I incorrectly wrote that the make and model was a TVR 350i. Wrong! It is apparently a TVR 2 axle rigid body sports...
Finally after a discussion about form filling etc, I am told that I can't tax it to run from the 1st April, as I'm not re-taxing it. Apparently I can only tax it no more than 2 days before the start of the next month...
To rub salt into my wounds, the lady in the post office tells me that I will be better off if I tax it for 12 months, then cancel it after 6 months...

I must say, I dread the annual trek to the Post Office. It's the only time I use the bloody useless organisation. Whichever queue I pick, I will be behind the wrinkly who is drawing her pension, in cash, in a randomly requested denomination of notes and coins. This is to make herself an easy target for any mugger. Then, she wants two pounds of TV licence stamps. Then, she wants a few pounds on her bloody electric key meter thing. Then, she purchases a couple of other bizarre stamps that nobody else (except OAPs) know exist. This is usually finished with a request for a couple of stamps, which will be paid for in cash from her purse. The purse she has just put her sodding pension into. She will count out the coins painstakingly slowly, to get the right amount.
Get some bloody direct debits! And get a cash point card whilst your at it.

I think it's because the Galant was registered after 1st March 2001 and is therefore subject to an emissions based charge as a petrol car, whereas the Tiv was registered before 1st March 2001 and is therefore subject to a standard charge as a private/light goods vehicle.

Now you know why Post Offices have armoured glass between you and them. It's not for sawn-off shotgun wielding scrotes with Pretty Pollys on their bonces, it's for enraged motorists trying to give the Government money.
(The last time I taxed mine, there were two other people trying to tax theirs ahead of time because they were going to be out of the country at the relevant time, and didn't want to be fined. The Post Office pod-people weren't having any of it. "No, you can't tax it in advance." "Yes, you'll get fined." "No, we don't care.")

About 2 months after taxing my MPV (Diesel), I received a letter from the DVLA informing me that I had paid TOO LITTLE road tax.
They expect me to send them an extra £20! 
Edited to add: I thought I would check on the DVLA website what the correct tax should be, and I actually owe them £30! It's so bleedin' complicated, even they can't get it right!
I wonder if they'd have written if I'd paid too MUCH tax?

The local hero in my village P.O. reminds me of the guy in telly advert - 'read that number plate please-and again please. Trouble is he always gives me the wrong bloody forms for just about everything, I fill them in take them back to the counter and he then sais to me, this is the wrong form!!!!!
