Camshaft or electrical problem re-post

Ive posted this up on the chim page but no real luck with an answer, maybe on the open forum someone will be able to help.
A couple of months ago I had a problem with the chim, basically when I was in first and ready to pull away there was some hesitation with the engine and then we were off. It would just sort of die then come back to life again. I could stop this from happening by keeping the revs high and not staying in first to long.
The car then went in for a 12k service, i let the mechanic now what the problem was and he let me know it was probably the spark plugs as they were quiet filthy. Anyway after the service everything was sorted. Or so i thought. About three/four months after the service it came back. Same sort of problem, only in first and only when I’m stopped and need to start again.
i let my mechanic know it came back when i had a new radiator put in and after he had the car for a week he explained to me it could be the camshaft is knackered and in need of replacement. The car had done over 100k miles and almost everything I’ve replaced on the car is original.
a friend of mine has suggested it may not be the cam but an electrical issue. as it the problem only happens in low gears at low speeds, due to the increase loads being put thru the computers in the car. I’ve had a second opinion from another garage, let him know the issue, let him know what my mechanic has said, let him know about the possible electric issue rather than cam issue and the second garage answer was also undetermined.
now my question is getting the cam replaced with all the other bits and bobs that go with it will cost me around £1000, is there any way of checking myself if they need replacing. now if i check and they turn out to be fine what sort of electrical problem would/could be causing this stop/start.
any help, any help at all would be great.

If it's mechanical then the fault would happen everytime the same circumstances arrise. If it's electrical then the fault would be more likely to be intermittent one. First thing I would do is clean and make good all earthing points. Not knowing too much about the Chim ignition system but a worn Dizzy can cause this as well as a worn cam as it will make the timing slightly out. Wont be noticeable at higher revs. More likely to be the Dizzy than the cam if neither has ever been change/refurbished.
Have you had a look on RPI website for basic settings of throttle pot etc?

I can tell you I had various running issues, stalling when stopping at lights and just general annoyances.
Tearing down the engine revealed a worn cam and bore wear on No8 cylinder.
Engine has had a rebore, cam etc etc, nothing electrical was touched and it now runs perfectly.
One stab in the dark on electricals could be a worn throttle pot, the track inside can wear out at small throttle openings as thats the bit that gets used the most, but it is a guess. Consider at your mileage you could have more than one item thats worn beyond spec.
