Lake District driving

Off to a mate's wedding this weekend near Kendal. We're going up on Friday evening and the wedding isn't until Saturday afternoon. That leaves the morning for a little hooning around the Lake District.

Can anyone recommend some good roads from near Kendal? I've never been there before so any guidance is gratefully received.

I cannot recommend any roads around the Kendal area as I normally head out towards Borrowdale. But what I will say is there are some fantastic roads and scenery around that part of the world.

Sounds obvious, but got to do the Wrynose/Hardnott passes (on same road) just so you've done them.

One corner up to Hardnott (from Wrynose) I swear felt like 1 in 1 - good fun.

My S is particularly low, but still only scraped a couple of times - watch the road profile (hump in middle where sides have subsided on single track) and you should be OK.

Have a look inot Grasmere, one the most beautiful little villages you've ever seen, and they produce some of the nicest ginger-bread you will have ever tasted!

Any of the main Lakes roads are superb as long as there aren't too many tourists clogging up the roads.
Newby Bridge right up to Keswick is absolutely mega when the roads are empty. Windermere to Broughton and back round the South coast road is a pretty good-un.

Minor roads are very scenic but tend to be pretty rough. Depends what you are after. Don't attempt Hardknot or Wrynose 10am-6pm, especially at the weekends as there is far too much tourist traffic resulting in scared drivers, appalling single track road etiquette and sometimes near total gridlock.

The A6 north out of Kendal up over Shap - lovely & quiet as everyone uses the M6. Don't know what Kendal's like just now though but in February the north end of the town was gridlock with roadworks. If you go into the Lakes themselves, go north as the south becomes a ratpit. Some nice driving up the side of Bassenthwaite and then around the back of Blencathra

Go further up still, through Penrith, Langwathby, Alston, over to Bishop Auckland then back down through Kirkby Stephen taking in a short strecth of A66 (Location of Baz world Cerb record attempt) thats a lovely run

Taken a couple of weeks ago near the Langdale Pikes. All the roads are good and you get four seasons in an hour!
