Have just been on a short journey and as I was heading towards my final destination the engine died, I turned the ignition again and it restarted but then died again. Having stopped for 5 mins I tentatively started and drove the final 1/4 mile without further incident?

The oil pressure was very low, temperature seemed ok and there was some vapour coming from the exhausts on inspection....I didn't hear any nasty noices before the engine died - any advice please as I have 10 miles to get home! Engine is a 4.0 V8 'J' reg, and the car has recently been serviced. I was "making progress" after having allowed time for the engine to warm up but nothing crazy.

I am no expert under the bonnet - what should I look for?

Thanks Toby

For starters it could be the Fuse breaking down Thats attached to the Chassis behind drivers side front wheel??
Or maybe a fuel Starvation problem??

I believe the fuseable link that's mounted to the engine mounting, is only on the later model cars. You should have one around the fuse box/battery area. Had a similar problem myself two weeks ago, car hasn't broken down again but I'm going to change the fuse anyway. Check all your electrical connections, especially the ones in the engine bay. Was the car very hot when it cut out ?? If so it maybe one of the electrical components in the engine bay breaking down, coil, ignition amplifier, possibly.
