From next month my current insurers (Chaucer) no longer want to renew any TVR single car policies, which means I have to change brokers - no problem. The same brokers currently provide me with full RAC UK and European cover at sensible money, but won't do it without the car insurance.
Let me stress I have never claimed on anything and nothing else has changed, so that isn't the reason. Neither have I called out the breakdown people in 8 years, for obvious reasons, I drive a TVR wink

So, what breakdown cover do you have and what sort of money is it? My other cars have breakdown cover included so it is a single car cover I am after to be taken up with the insurance.

The other twist to the tale is that apparently several breakdown companies (RAC included) will not cover cars abroad if over 11 years old and as I go over the water at least every couple of months I want that, so that is not negotiable. Have any of you with 11+ year old TVRs checked this or asked the question?

Feel free to PM me with any names to avoid and why if it goes against the N&S rules.

Many thanks for any input smile

Not a TVR. But I use www.britanniarescue.com for my 13yo MX5 with no problems (as far as I know.) I had them out to the MR2 as well on it's final days and that was 20.

Always been a good response time as well... I just wish I wasn't so familiar with it!

Have you ever asked the question "is my 13 YO car covered abroad with full get you home cover etc"?

Not doubting you, but a mate of mine has just asked his people as a result of this and the answer was NO, despite them having taken his money for UK and European cover!!

No I've not asked but it's not in their documentation http://www.britanniarescue.com/upload/britannia-re... . And they have recovered the cars (older than 11 years) without charging me.

I agree that doesn't mean new policies are the same as old etc. But I'd think they are worth a call (unless you find another cheaper. Which you might as I've been lazy and just renewed for years)

The AA charge an extra premium on their European Breakdown Recovery for cars over 6 years old.

I believe the RAC will also do it for an extra £100, but the point is unless you have paid this extra you don't have the cover.

This thread is also a bit of a heads up for anyone unaware of this (as I was).

Thanks, will add them to my list of possibles then.

Was it a stand alone breakdown cover for one car, can I ask what sort of money it was and when?

AH! I poked about at the site a bit more and found this!
"We offer exclusive products for CSMA Club members. Key features include:
recovery to a UK destination of your choice
cover for the driver and up to seven passengers
no additional charge for cars over ten years old
no limit to the number of call outs (excluding recurring problems)
24/7 response from a national network of more than 3,000 breakdown professionals"

As a CSMA member I don't see that charge. Sorry!

I went with Gem breakdown

http://www.motoringassist.com/Breakdown-Cover/Reco...

They had an offer on, so the cover I get is £85 rather than £120+ as they are throwing in free joint cover so I can cover my sister for free. They cover any car your in, not just your own! They've extended the offer till the end of this month, but you only have a few more days left.

Can't see anything in the T&C's about car age, so should be ok smile

I have a '97 Griff and have had the same problem in terms of having to find breakdown cover outside the insurance bundle - I've gone for More Than which gives me UK and Europe Breakdown and Recovery cover but no home start (could have had that but didn't really want it) all for approx £65 for 5k miles cover so not a bad deal and it relates to any approved driver with the specific car so no issue with it being over 10 years old or anything. The car isn't insured with them and you can take out the breakdown cover as a stand alone thing.
One thing to note is that some breakdown providers say you have to have a working spare wheel - this is in the small print as a condition of their cover from what I can see but I checked with More Than and have it in writing from them that I can use the tyre sealant and pump so that is all fine. Could be worth a look as the Europe bit alone is nearly as much to add on with some providers.

Checkout the AA.

Certainly cover cars more than 10 years old.

Search on here for ADAC.

ADAC is a German breakdown operator, many people use them on here as they cover incidents at the nurburbring.

It works out cheap cheap, covers all europe and they send the AA out when you breakdown in the UK.

I think membership covers the person not the car so you can be in any car.

Just do a search on here for more.

in the same boat here, always had other classic policy's with breakdown included, now i have had to change and cant believe the cost of breakdown cover! Roadside assistance is nearly worthless to me, if I cant fix it he probably wont either!

will give ADAC and Britannia a go, cheers!

My insurance is through Classic Line and I got breakdown cover when i took out insurance on my 98 car (i have previouly done this with Mannings too). Cost was somewhere between £40&£70 for UK & European breakdown and recovery.

Can't remember the name of the company, but think the one through Mannings ended up going to the AA and my current one just sends out a random local company.

I have used them a few times unfortunately over the past 4 years, 4 times for recovery (twice when PAS rack failed, once when noticed a strange noise which i thought was alternator but was not sure so stopped - recovery guy didn't seem to have a clue so they recovered me back home then I looked at it more and turned out the alternator bearings had gone and once to take to the garage a few months ago when valley gasket leak was really bad so didnt want to drive it) One other time i used roadside when Otter switch stopped working and car started to overheat as fans not kicking in and didnt have any wire to bypass the switch so they came out, i told them what to do as i knew what problem was and then carried on my journey!)

So, i have been very happy with the service and price is a bargain compared to buying from AA/RAC direct especially with European cover included! I feel i have definitely got my moneys worth!

Edit to say: I must check my policy for European cover!. I worked on the basis that as they sold me cover for my car it would be fine, but will now have to check!

Looking at this now for a foreign trip and a colleague just recommended AA Gold Star. Apparently it's very comprehensive cover.

Well, not the last bit, touch wood, but definitely Britannia.

Because I have nothing better to do, I put in for an online quote for European cover...

All details remained the same apart from the registration date I put in:
1990 £175
2000 £165
2005 £130
2010 £130

So, as with the AA, they do load the premium based on vehicle age, they just don't tell you. I don't necessarily have a problem with that, by the way, just an observation smile

also guys websites like www.topcashback.co.uk or quidco.com can save you alot of money aswell (if you dont know about these kind of websites you NEED to work out how they work and get signed up!)

for instance I'm now looking at the AA £107 package, then removed homestart as I don't really need it, which brings it down to £79,plus I will earn £47 from quidco which brings it down to £32!!!

I am only going abroad once this year so will just buy cover separately.

Oh and that is personal cover, so doesnt matter on the age of the vehicle that i can see in the T&C's and asked over the phone to check and will also cover me as a passenger!

oh just to add the over 10 years old thing tends to be just vehicle cover, personal cover seems to cover you it seems
