Afternoon,

I am offered to have my manifolds coated in HR500 for a quater of the price of a ceramic coating. I know you normally get what you pay for but the only reason I was tempted with a ceramic coating was for the looks and any reduction on under bonnet heat was merely bonus. The powder coat has been specifically designed for car and motorcycle exhaust systems.

My question is the HR500 coating is rated up to 500 degree C..... will this be enough as the ceramic coating I was looking at it rated up to 750 degrees C

keeping the food stains down is a trouble for you ,so a good powder coating is just what the chef ordered

Errr, nope. Not manifolds I'm afraid if you ever drive it hard.

I've seen AIR temps under manifold heat sheilding of 650°C!! Surface metal temps will be at least 6-700°C I would have thought.

They'll hit 500 degrees in about 1 minute if stainless. Cast will take a little longer.

They won't look very nice when you've been on your first run I'm afraid!

Ahh I see, perhaps not such a fantastic idea in that case.

Thanks for the advice gents. thumbup

On a separate note I find it very difficult to justify ceramic coating my originals when I know I can buy a brand new S/S pair for half as much again. hmmm decisions scratchchin

Agreed, the EGT sensor in my setup goes far beyond 500 degrees. From memory I think sustained full throttle on track on big load brings it up somewhere approaching 900 degrees! - That is measured in the middle of the bore however, cylinder 5, just an inch or so from the exhaust port (cylinder 5 is hottest due to the firing order)

What do you want though, ceramic coating is to help bring temps down. New SS pipes will not help heat rejection into the engine bay. smile
