Trackday/Motorbike Helmet

Having run out of serious excuses not to,I am tempted to do a couple of trackdays this year. I also think it is time I had another at passing my bike test and buying a bike.

I know that there can be problems with bike helmets not being fire retardant and therefore not being acceptable for trackdays but can anyone tell me whether or not a helmet that is suitable and complies with all the necessary trackday regs would also be suitable and legal to use on a road bike?

I use my Arai on track as well as on the bike.

I think you have to check the standards etc that each track applies, but I'm sure someone that's done more than 2 track days will be along soon with better advice

You can still use a BS6658 Type A/FR helmet on track (also road legal for bikes), although these may be withdrawn from 2016 - see MSA Blue Book 2011 (p164).

Could be wrong on this, but I seem to recall that the other standards don't result in road legal bike lids.

BS6658 or bike helmet with the gold seal is perfectly acceptable. In my experience, never seen mine (or anybody else's for that matter) being checked by the scruits. That's not to say you don't need a decent helmet though!

I often wondered why they state "fire resistant helmet" when they allow normal clothing. Perhaps it is ok to fry your whole body as long as you head is protected.

I think it's a case of more TDOs (well, those using the MSV circuits) mirroring the MSA regs. Doubtless more than a little backside covering... although I'd agree, it does seem crackers. That said, can't recall seeing much if anything in the way of helmet checking.

They are starting to tighten up, as with everything. I have had an open face helmet for years. Last time at Snet I was told it had to be full face. Despite being at Cadwell the week before. The way of the world I guess.

But I don't think they look inside to check the label.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will buy a full face that complies with BS6658 as suggested. When I last took and failed my bike test in 1969/70 I used a sort of pudding basin type that I bought from a junk stall on Preston market. Happy Days!!
