French speedtraps, be warned !

A word of warning to all of you going to France this summer. I live in The Netherlands, as many of you know, probably the most speedcam infested country in the world. And now the French are going to be very harsh to speeding motorist also. 1 kmh over the speedlimit will cost you 135 euro and 50 kmh or more will cost 1500 euro and a three year ban of French roads. At the moment they have about 100 speedcams of wich 30 are mobile speedcams. Their aim is to increase that number to about a 1000 in 2005. All of the info is from their own website.

1kph? I'm sorry, but are the French police really THAT crazy?
I am sure many Speedos are out by a couple of mph / kmh an hour, so should they
at least allow the 10% rule?
That 1 kmh will kill the UK tourist trade in France.
If the French only want my money by impossing ridiculous rules, I'll spend
my vacation money elsewhere on fun not fines.

IF this is all as bad as is suggested then it could well kill the Le Mans weekend for loads.
However, something along these line comes up every year just before Le Mans so be prepared for it to all be the norm (with increased penalties IF you are caught).
we saw loads of brits pulled last year... and a gendarm with a plastic bag full of uk licences, and even one chap being sat down on the curb in handcuffs !!!

getting really pissed off with all this now.
seems le mans is a waste of time. half the fun is the drive down there. I dont expect to drive like a lunatic but a rapid drive on lovely french roads makes the le mans weekend. If that dissapears then I think I'll just not bother with le mans and start attending another motorsport event in a european country that are not going to be so anal about speeding.
maybe a weekend taking the ferry to bilbao or santander and drive across spain to barcelona for the spanish GP.

Just let me know if we decide to make this an event
your e-mail formed the basis of my decison to head down to spain after this years le mans and the attitude towards speeding is a lot more relaxed. Now that the french are tightening up to what amounts to extortion I shall be thankful when I hit spanish soil.
well up for a similar trek next year to spain as an alternative to le mans if the speeding myths turn out to be correct.
I'm sorry, it was not my intention to ruin your trip to le Mans, only to warn you of new activity of the French police. I have seen TVR's with English plates overtake me in France with speeds well over 120 mph and even with a good radardetector (witch I have, ilegal in France to..) you can never stop on time. For that you need the new SLR as you probably saw on Top Gear last night. Boy I can only dream of brakes like that.
In my first post you can find the French website with all the details. Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge of French can translate.

sorry Fred - didnt mean to lay any blame at your door mate and thanks muchly for the heads up on it.
Just seems to be some truth in the speed scaremongering for this years le mans and some evidence that policing measures are in place. Just dissapoints me a little but its by far better than people such as yourself forewarn us so we either stick to the limits or are aware of the penalties if we break them.

schnozz, i'm with you, Le Mans for me is the drive there and back, driving round on thursday and friday seeing the local countryside and roads, and a weekend of awesome cars (on and off track) making amazing noises.
the strip outside Maison Blanche is always fun too!
but if the french are going mad with fines then i may well join your spanish GP convoy.

YEAH!
Lets see how this year goes and if it is as bad as the rumors say we'll change the annual pilgrimmige to another country.
With the LE MANS SERIES now doing 4 races a year there is a fair bit of variety too. Silverstone in August too. (I started athread on this in the LM forum some time ago).
Verysideways - If all else fails we'll always have that strip at Masion blanche on Mad Friday, although le plod have been clamping down on that the past few years too.

the only le plod I saw on the strip on Friday last year was PC le Mungo with a massive supersoaker shouting at me and Psychobert as we were flagged down by the english nutter with the union jack when we turned up!
Fortunately no camera's yet in my area (Dordogne), only an occasional laser gun.
One of the advantages of moving to France was the more relaxed attitude of the local police to speeding, which was getting ridiculous in Holland (felt like the old Sovjet Union).
Hopefully it will stay that way for some time, but indeed, I'm hearing the same from the local grapefine. Just hope they weren't out with their radar guns yesterday as the Griff was going like hell, I just couldn't help myself.

I know I'm stating the obvious, but there will be a lot of bias towards UK number plates, and part of my uncles life is LeMans, he's told me there will be a number of unmarked french police cars patrolling certain routes which are popular with UK LeMans fans this year... they've 100% got the hump against us... b%$*%£@s!!! (do you think they're trying to make a point or something????)
Just having a look at that french site. I think that this map shows what areas have mobile cameras available to them (and looks like they have most routes to Le Mans covered).
