Differential Judder
Discussion
Reading through the archives it appeares that it can be a common problem.
However, the question I have is:
If pulling from cold and and during normal driving is OK, could it be oil related???
Is there a thicker oil I could use in the diff as a first pass?
It intrigues me as to why it soon clears after a bit of normal driving
And another question, which diff do I have for Borg Warner gearbox set up?
Cheers
Nick

Check rear suspension / anti roll bar / drive shafts, as this is when the suspension squats most. I had a similar noise when braking or cornering left (i.e. when ns rear wheel lifted. Turned out to be a broken anti roll bar mounting.
I remember reading that as the drive shafts wear out you can get a similar noise.

sure it's not the clutch?
BMWs do this when hot and it's the clutch.
Yeah, you're right there. If you've got a leaky rear engine oil seal or gearbox seal, oil can get onto the clutch plates and cause judder when taking up drive. This will be burned off though after a bit of clutch slipping under normal driving, unless it's a really bad leak.

I've got the same thing. Happened when I had my diff replaced with a new one (which was also inspected). It's fine under normal conditions but after 30 minutes or more on a motorway, it judders when pulling away. Once you're up to 5mph it's fine.
Peninsula suggested to keep an eye on it and it's certainly not getting any worse. They did say it felt like worn limited slip plates so maybe that's what you have.
Let us know if you find a solution.

I asked this question ages ago and the great God Steve Heath answered so what I am about to type must be correct
It's something to do with the LSD, the oil in the diff gets hot along the motorway and this causes something to happen in the diff which creates the judder, it goes when the oil has cooled.
His answer was a bit more techie!
Mine had a re-con diff fitted just before I bought it and it's done 3 years since with no troubles. Interestingly if after the motorway run you can pull away on a slight lock I bet the judder isn't there.
