Beggers me why anyone would think the Stag saw the demise of Triumph (and capitalisation of nouns*).

Triumph was taken out by the same mix of industrial relations, build quality and CEO egos that killed the rest of the car industry.

OK, the Stag wasn't a spectacular financial success (though I believe did make money). At the time Triumph and Rover had merged but Rover management wouldn't let Triumph use the Buick v8 as it would have stolen sales from the P6. The Stag was aimed at the US market so had to have a v8, forcing Triumph to build their own.

  • Unless this is a Bauhaus inspired posting.

rover gave triumph an engine to fit and they fitted it but then said there was not enough clearence for the bonnet. it was mr webster i believe who championed the triumph v8. shame if triumph hierachy had put there ego,s to one side they could have competed in the market they were after... merc slk series.
by the way i drive a twin plenum rover in a stag..........

That's not what the ex-works staff say...

That said there isn't much wrong with the Stag V8 and in may ways it's a better engine than the Buick - all you had to do was follow the service book. Shame most Triumph service staff considered themselves above such things and just treated it like an all-iron engine.

ok yes the stag engine on paper was more advanced, but... simplex timing chain driving two overhead cams and a jack shaft, cylinder head studs off the 90 degrees to the block face, crank not tufrided to acceptable debth, unf threads in aluminium..... need i gone. Dont get me wrong i wish triumph had not have rushed the developement of the engine, we may have seen a 32 valve v8.
