Had new discs and pads on the front mid December, have done about 1000 miles or so since. Was checking tyre pressures today and looked down to see this (both fronts have the same problem). Firstly has anyone seen this before where the friction material comes away from the backing plate? and secondly what could be the cause? Hoping the garage replace on goodwill.

Car is a Toyota Celica gen 7 (if that makes any difference)

Thanks

What brand of pads were used?

I could be wrong but that looks like it's be the anti squeal shim that's come loose rather than the backing plate.

Here is a photo I've just taken of my old brakes from my Gen 7. Definitely looks like it's just the shim rather than the backing plate. In you photo you can still see the backing plate between the shiny metal clips.

Would say the clips that old the shim in place have gone and its dropped down. Get it back to the garage.

I assumed it was a shim at first too, but if you look closely in the first pic you can see an E-mark and other lettering (shims aren't normally marked up in my experience).

The markings also appear to show 'Delphi' as the brand of pad (not in pic).

The shims on mine are marked up with similar (though you cant see in the photo). Also the backing plate on the pads is around 6 or 7mm thick. The bit that's dropped down looks considerably thinner than that

Ok that's a bit more reassuring thanks. Thinking about it, they are pretty thin. I presume they have simply put in the wrong sized shim or as someone said previously, missing some clips. Panic over, cheers!

With most pads you don't get a new backing plate, but they do tend to rust/fall apart, so they're a bit of a pain trying to fit. Sticking a dab of copper grease in there and bending some of the clips should reattach it, and the caliper should hold it in.

Garage have changed the pads. The adhesive had come off between the pad and the 'anti noise' plate that was attached to them. They come from the Delphi factory attached, so can only put it down to a bad part/glue confused

It happens, not really anything to worry about.

Although lately I have seen a few cars where the friction material has come off the backing plates. Happened on a few cars that wouldnt be used that frequently. just lucky they were caught before any serious damage was caused. And it isnt cheap brands used either !
