Winter Tyres

I was not sure where to post this, so mods, feel free to move it if there is a better place.

Ever since my time in Scandanavia, I have been saying that I will buy a set of second hand wheels and fit winter tyres to them.

I now have the wheels, and altho it is probably too late for this year, I hope to get winter tyres on them in time for next winter.

However, my car has 205/40-17 on the front and 225/35-17 on the rear.

On Blackcirlces (my prefered tyre supplier) at least, there are no winter tyres in those sizes.

Is there a specialised winter tyre provider I could contact? There is plenty of time, so even if they have to be shipped from abroad it should not be a problem.

Or, could I change the width or profile by one size in order to find a winter tyre that fits?

Read the handbook, that will tell you what sizes will fit. http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk are a good supplier from Euroland

The Handbook does not ofer alternative sizes.

That site has winter tyres for the fronts, not the rears.

I understand that if I fit them, I should fit all four, the difference being like driving half on cross plies, half on radials.

My car has a different size front / rear & I also had trouble finding winters in a suitable size. I have fitted slightly narrower tyres on the rear - I'm sure a garage would be able to advise on alternative sizes.

Maybe have a look on Tesco Tyres... I've used them for winter tyres before, They have their 'preferred' fitters up and down the country - and you get clubcard points too!!

If you have different front and rear sizes though you'll have to add the front pair and rear pair seperately on checkout....

Tesco tyres is run by black circles, and other than the club card points, is identical.

As black circles, or no other internet site I have tried, have 225/35-17 winter tyres I am giving up on the idea.

I will ask at my local tyre place next time I pass and I will follow any lead that anyone suggests, but I have a nasty feeling they are not available. Hence my thoughts on a slightly different size.

Bit of a resurrection, but you'll be lucky to find many winter tyres for sale now - most places start getting stock around October.

Keep hold of the wheels (and the cash) and look again in 6 months.
