Just pondering this, I've got some new wheels on the way and was debating getting a new set of rubber to go on them. Only thought it the tyres i have have more than enough life in them ( about 4mm of tread ), there wouldnt be any issues with swapping old tyres over would there?

Or should i just not be a tightarse and get a new set?

Depends how much they cost (or would cost) I guess.

Budget about a tenner a wheel to swap the tyres over, including new valves, balancing etc.

No, no issues, assuming the tyres are of an appropriate size for the new alloys you have.

One of the local tyre places here has actually refused to swap some tyres between wheels for me (cash in hand type work). Apparently it can be dangerous and they quoted the tyres had to be less than 6 months old!

Went to the next place down the road - sorted.

4mm is 'more than enough'?

just use the old wheels for a while, and swap the new ones on when you need new tyres, no?

Well ive had them 12 months and about 10k and havent really worn down that much, very durable!

Wheels are the same as standard, just a different colour

Shop around and youl get a good price for brand new tyres. I pay £65 for toyo proxes4 195/40/17 from camskills.co.uk.....then £10 for fitting, alignment and valves.

This, I swapped my tyres and then after a few weeks the canvas broke, so I had to buy new tyres after all, could have saved a few tenners driving with the old wheels.

swapping is fine (i work for a well known tyre fitting company) as long as no damage is caused removing and re-fitting,
Saying its dangerous probably meant they hadnt made budget that day!

I'm assuming the same place would refuse to replace a puncture then, as you have to remove and refit the tyre to do that.....no difference than swapping it to another rim. Its unfortunate that some people will swallow this BS.

How do you propose changing a tyre onto a different rim caused the 'canvas' to break?
