That time again of choosing which tyres to have - i have narrowed down to a choice of 2.

These will be rear only of an X5, and driving is a mix of crawling traffic and moderate a-roads, and the occasional trip on the m25.

The choices are Falken 453cc's for £145 ea.
or
Pace Azura at £91 ea.

Question is, are "cheap" tyres really that bad, or will the car fall over as soon as i turn the key?

I know this is PH, and we should all go about on the latest Perilli P-zero mk.7 UHP Ferrai edition, but for rear only town driving - would 8mm Budget tyres be better than 2mm worn super-duper stuff?

Some cheap tyres are pretty good, some are very poor. No idea about that particular one.

You say you want cheapies for the rear only. Just don't come back sobbing when the back of your car overtakes the front....

Tyres keep the car attached to the road surface, disperse water, braking performance etc.

Read the tyre reviews, and make an informed choice. Some are quite good, some not so much.

For something weighing considerably over 2000kg, I'd want something reasonable, a 1-2 metre difference in braking performance around town could have quite an effect.

I've never even heard of Pace tyres - no reviews on tyrereviews.co.uk either. Falken are a decent mid range brand so I would go with them given the choice of the two.

X5 tends to be heavy on tyres - wearing the rears on the inner edge particularly.

What tyres do you have on the front? It's not great to have non-matching tyres front to rear.

Evo Mag tyre test 2014:

"The top three

It's back to the top step for Continental with a convincing all round performance from the Sport Contact 5. Only dropping out of the top three twice, the Sport Contact 5 excelled in both subjective feel and objective handling. The aging, but updated Pirelli P Zero had a good result in second place, largely down to wet and dry handling, and the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 rounded out the top three, with the usual Goodyear blend of wet grip and steering feel.

The Rest

Fourth spot was taken by Yokohama, with the AD08. It was a surprising nomination from Yokohama, with the Advan V105 the logical choice, but the gamble paid off. Easily the most exciting and fastest tyre in the dry, it wasn't as awful as some track day tyres in the wet, giving you an "extreme performance" tyre you can drive all year.

Michelin finished fifth, with a good all round performance, but we tend to feel the French brand was disadvantaged by the small size chosen. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport would have been the logical competitor to the other tyres on test, but starting in 18 inches Michelin had to put forward the softer, more touring orientated Pilot Sport 3.

Vredestein entered the replacement to the Ultrac Sessanta, the Vorti, and will be happy they beat Toyo and Hankook to win the battle of the midrange tyres. Dunlop disappointed in ninth struggling with overall grip, and Bridgestone embarrassingly finished last at home, with neither good feel or good grip."

Mad to scrimp on tyres unless you're driving a snotter imho.

TX.

Me neither.

Given the choice, I'd go for the Falkens.

Front's are Hankooks S1's.

And as the poster above mentioned, the rear's have worn on the inside edge a lot more than the rest of the tyre, so brownie points to them - however i managed to get about 35-40k miles out of them.

The pace azura's also go under the name of Zeta Azura on some sites.

Edit: Will probably go with the Falken's in all likelihood.

I fit any tyres based on price to my audi. Its a car never driven hard or particularly fast. Never had an issue under braking or extreme weather. Its maybe not so great if I mash the accelerator when pulling out of a junction.

My DC5 has come with Toyo Proxes, a budget performance tyre.

Can't wait to get some Bridgestones on there! Never skimp on tyres! It's such an un-pistonhead thing to do.

One of my suppliers stock pace as their lowest budget. I wouldn't touch them myself, but their are far worse out there.

I haven't heard of Pace, so I would go for Falken I suppose. I've had Falkens before and they weren't bad at all.

£145 is cheap for tyres of that size. My old X5 (bought thinking that it was something I'd like as much as my usual Range Rovers) had very wide rear tyres (I don't remember exactly the width).
And I think it had Michelin tyres which were getting on for double that price. I'd go for the Falkens.

I always smiled when on these kind of threads, some wag would suggest choosing 'Ling Long Ditchfinders'.

I was amazed one day when I saw a 98 Focus with a pair of Ling Longs finest on the front!

Quite surprised that you can afford to buy / run a X5 and yet you are prepared to put rubbish tyres on it for the sake of £100. You have said you will be doing motorway driving with it.
Why compromise with such a vehicle?

As far as I can see, he's not saying he's prepared to put rubbish tyres on it, he's asking whether the Pace Azura are rubbish.
