Brake Connector types - anyone care to explain ?

Anyone care to explain the different brake connector types :-

JIC v Metric v BSP v NPT

Looking to get some adapters but totally confused.

bsp is british standard pipe thread, metric is the modern standard and someone else will have to reply to the others
