If your car is equipped with disks that are no longer available have any of you had any experience of having replacements made?

To be specific, the De Tomaso has disks unique to the model and clearly there is a good chance I am going to have to try and have some made.

Any pointers to relevant companies or first and experiences would be much appreciated

Many thanks

Speak to a specialist brakes place and they should be able to tell you a car that has discs with the same or similar dimensions. Its often the case of these people quietly hoarding the knowledge until asked.

After a throwing-toys-out-of-pram episode with a certain low spec brake parts supplier I got some replacements made to order by BG developments. Basically a set of bells made to order, and some standard discs cut down to the size I wanted. The price was quite reasonable, because they had a standard disc about the right size.

I've been talking to Ian at Godspeed Brakes (www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk) about a Brembo 4 pot setup for my Chimaera. He seems to know his stuff + has the CNC machines to make up whatever you might need. Sometimes dealing with him is a little frustrating, since he's a one man band and hence doesn't always answer the phone because he's machining. I'm not sure if he could help, but I'd say it's probably worth dropping him an email.

Good luck,

Steve.

Try Brake Engineering

www.brake-eng.com/

they dont list DeTomasso on the web site but if you give them a call next week they may be able to help. Prices are also ultra competitive for standard parts.

Alternativly if you know what hubs the car used ( assuming they bought in hubs from some mainstream manufacturer rather than making their own from scratch ) you could search the disk database on the site to see if there are any disks that would fit.
Also if you know the wheel stud pattern ( No. and p.c.d. ) you could match this up to another make and search the database for similar disks. Dont worry about the centre bore as these are easily modified but overall hub diameter is important.

www.needforspeed.co.uk/pages/home.asp have some usefull disk dimensions - but check brake for a price comparison if you find some that will fit.

Roughly where abouts would the 'low-spec' brake supplier be located then?

I'll say no more.

If you're matching Ford hubs, bear in mind that there are at least two different flange sizes with the same 3" 4 stud pattern so check it'll actually go over the hub as well as the stud pattern.

I would second Pete's suggestion and talk to Bob Green at BG Developments www.bgdevelopments.co.uk He sorted out a huge set of AP discs and calipers for my Wedge, and all at a reasonable cost for what I got.

Many thanks for the very useful pointers.

Once she gets here from Australia I can start to assess things but at this stage I’m gathering together a range of contacts for the main problem areas I’m likely to face.

The key problem areas with the car seem to be the hubs which are specific to the car, wheels which are the same and as already stated ,disks which makes the four corners a real pain in the but.

Oh! Couple that to Italian alloy from the early 80’s so apart from that it should be a doddle

silly me, you can’t get windscreens anymore either.

I think this may be the first of many similar cries for help
