Hello! My girlfriend has got a Ford Ka (2 years old), and the other day we noticed a load of strange (slightly oily) fluid all around the inside of the driver side wheel arch - and some has splashed on the outer casing.

I've checked all the engine fluids and nothing is being lost. The only component I can see through the wheel arch is a suspension spring. Is it possible that the shock absorber has leaked some fluid? Anyone got any tips on a simple diagnosis for this fault, or have any other suggestions on what the fluid could be?

She did drive straight over the mother of all pot holes the other day, which is why I think it could be a leaky shock......

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

Cheers

'Bounce' the affected corner of the car by pushing down on it. If it bounces more than twice then the damper/shock/whatever you want to call it is knackered.

Other possibilities.... well, in a crazy world it could be brake fluid, but thats very unlikely - youd have no brakes by now

The last possibility is that its some kind of rustproofing applied by the factory.
