Hi

Car passed flying colours on MOT and I just had the rear dampers changed to Bilstein and was also wanting the bumpstops replaced with the Coupe ones.

Garage just rang and said the hole which the bumpstop sits in is for fecked and they have left them off now.

It's my shed/station car, should I be concerned here for not having them in?

Thanks

Fecked in what way? Rotten?

If so, then having a bumpstop there would be an MOT fail. If not, then are there other suspension mounts within 30cm? If not, then pass so long as the structure isn't compromised, just the bumpstop bracket.

It's only really a problem if not having the bumpstops would mean that full compression - hitting a big speedhump too quickly or something - would go beyond the travel of the dampers and bottom them out, that'll not do them any favours.

Though if it's got rust, you should probably fix it, it'll only get worse.

"A suspension bump stop must not be confused with rubber/synthetic suspension spring assistors."
and
"Reasons for rejection
1. a. Inadequate clearance of the axle or suspension with the bump stop or chassis
b. a suspension unit so weak that the body or other part of the vehicle fouls a road wheel or would do so if the vehicle was laden.
Note: a missing bump stop rubber is not a reason for rejection."

Why?

If the bump stops are doing anything, then not having them is probably going to be a problem. For example you might find the suspension arm punching through the shell if it leaves you with metal to metal contact in bumps.

If they aren't doing anything, it's not obvious why you would want to change them.

It's been lowered, and the standard bumpstops are long enough that they're constantly bottoming out, so shorter ones sort that?

Let's hope there's sufficient damper travel that the bumpstop is reached first.

Not been lowered. On standard suspension apart from the shocks.

The standard ones are very long and keep bottoming out making for an extremely harsh ride. Hence why I want the shorter ones in.

Went back to the garage, he basically did not fit them as the Coupe ones looked different to standards. I'll be going back to get them put on free of charge after Christmas.

I'd be sorting the shagged springs and dampers first, then. It shouldn't be bottoming out.

The rear spring pans are known for rusting out completely on those and the spring goes right through.
