I bought a car off a family friend Sat morning. Test drive went OK. Drove around for about an hour and no mishaps. Parked up and went about my business.
Came back later to move the car and the brakes were a bit sticky. Its an auto so when in drive it stayed put rather than moving off.
On a longer drive the next day it was fine for the 40 odd miles there. On the way back the same stick thing happened, ABS light came on and when I stopped there was smoke from the brakes, they'd clearly stuck and heated up. I let them cool down then drove the rest of the way home with no issues.
I know the car was laid up for about 3 years. What is the issue and possible remedy? Was going to take to a specialist to get checked out but wondered if I can do anything myself prior to that.

Likely to be corrosion on the pistons or slider pins, depending on the design of caliper.
Not unusual for a car that has been stood for years.
Let the garage take a look and clean the parts.
You could take a look yourself but if you don't know what you are doing then you could end up with a car on the drive with no brakes which makes it difficult to get it to a garage.

Unless its something really easy peasy like the slider pins, personally I'd look at just changing the calipers; the OHs V70 is "that age" and I really cannot be arsed mucking around changing pistons and seals and so on when I can get a shiny remanufactured new caliper for about 50 quid.
I use Brakes International in Rochdale (however they are local to me) and they're excellent. They do mail order, however I don't know how that would fare as they want your old caliper.
