My Golf has 94 Xl tyres.

I've been offered the same size in91 Y.

I know that the number is the max speed and the letter is the load handing.

I wonder if it effects handling if I went for the lower rated ones.

Letter is max speed, number is load index. XL means extra load.

The load index is how much weight the tyre can support when inflated correctly. XL tyres can carry higher loads (XL has always seemed superfluous to me as you don't get a 94 index tyre and a 94XL tyre).

Load index of 91 = 615kg per tyre, 94 = 670kg per tyre. Y indicates a max speed of 186mph.

You shouldn't fit lower load index tyres than recommended by the manufacturer. Explanation here.

Sorry to butt in on your thread. My situation is very similar to yours only the other way around. The recommended tyre index for my car is 91W and I selected the 94W option by mistake. The tyres were purchased online and have been paid for, not yet fitted. Would this different tyre index cause any problems?
