MOT - Advisories and tyres question.....
Discussion
Recently I took my car for a halfords MOT (yes I know.. big no no) But it was a free MOT from a offer 10 months prior.
Anyway, they passed it (shock!!!) but with a list of advisories.
One of the advisories states the following:
"Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge (both rear)"
So a week after this MOT, I decided to check them with my tyre gauge as they look like they've got a heap of meat on them including on the edges. Tyre guage shows 4mm on the edge. Other edge 3.7mm. Which is what? 50% worn from new?
My question is this... What is the minimum tread depth to get such an advisory? 4mm seems harsh to me.
Oh yeah and they decided to give me a written quote for 2 new tyres on the rear, despite having 4 to 5mm left on them.
Another advisory I got was:
"No acceleration detected"
This is quite alarming for any potential buyers for my car. It sounds like.... It cannot accelerate. No idea what this is?

There is no minimum tread depth that requires an advisory. i.e they can be 2mm and you don't have to advise them. (See the "ask MOT tester" thread) But remember that advisories are just that. In most cases its the Tester covering his or her arse. Anyway, they passed it (shock!!!) but with a list of advisories.

Can you post up a pic of the tyres in question?
Well, 4mm is NOT 50% worn it is 4/(8-2) so two thirds worn if you consider changing at 2mm depth. I imagine most advisories are to highlight to the owner items that may need attention before next MOT. Also, on the basis that many recommend that tyres are changed with 3mm left (especially with winter approaching), then a depth of 3.7mm for an advisory does not seem unreasonable to me.
Advisories on tyre depths on an MOT is not really an issue.

'No acceleration detected' means there wasn't enough emissions to trigger the machine. Firstly only very very stupid MOT testers make up advisories like that and secondly nearly every diesel tester has a hook up to measure engine RPM which doesn't need the emissions trigger. Again only very very stupid MOT testers don't know how to use it.

Yup. modern DPF equipped Diesels tend not to trigger the smoke meter.M_A_S said:

It's not one that many put down, but again. Cover your arse!M_A_S said:

Do explain where you attach this trigger on a DPF equipped car. Most dpf equipped cars in good fettle don’t emit enough particulate to “ trigger “ a reading by the smoke head on the emissions test equipment . Also some cars don’t work very well with the rpm pickup on the emmissions tester so you can’t really record anything . Current advise is to note this on the check sheet , no point putting it on the certificate imo

No need for any hook up. Diesel testers out there now which have a small box which plugs into the OBD port.
