Started the car on the drive to get the heater/demister started, lifted the clutch thinking it was in neutral when it was actually in second. frown As the car stalled there was a noise from the front left wheel. The coil spring has broken and gone into the tyre. Did the rocking from the stall break the coil spring? confused

(The car is 16 years old)

No
And even if it did it would have broken anyway on first speed bump
Likely broken for sometime and that rocking just Freed it to fall down to the tyre

Better sitting on the drive than when on the road - sounds like a lucky escape!

A similar story: I lifted the clutch after turning engine off and putting car in gear for parking. The engine, though, had run on (1970s - needed a de-coke!) for a second or two. Broke the half-shaft!

Thank you for your replies and help. I'm very relieved this happened on the driveway not while I was driving - that was a close call. It's getting towed to the garage tomorrow and will ask them to replace the other front coil spring too as I imagine that could be in a similar condition.
