Hi,
Got a 15 mile b road daily commute, it got a little sketchy in the wet. I have a 01 clio 172. Looking for recommendations for a 195/45 16 that won't break the bank or stick me in a ditch.

Cheers
Rich

Michelins used to be the recommended tyre on the 182 way back, depends on what driving you are doing really.

Depends on how cheap, you can get:

Vredestein Sportrac 5 £51 per tyre
Avon ZV7 £53 per tyre
Hankook K125 Ventus Prime 3 £65 per tyre

all plus fitting mind. A decent amount of choice of decent brands between 50-80 per tyre.

Spirited driving when allowed, was jyst using it to pootle to the shops but now had a longer drive so want some grip underneath me.

Was leaning towards the zx7, where did you get the £53 from?

You could always try driving slower? Or is that not the PH way....

They were spinning up in the wet without any provercation .

I think the tyres are quite old,and not matched, so need changing anyways.

All really good tyres; well suited to the UK climate

These, in spades, had a set on one of my 182's and my wife has a set on her Swift Sport. Hard to beat for the price.

Agreed, I’ve inherited a set on the latest shed.

Couple of year old, cracked to buggery, sod all grip in the wet.

Got some Hankook Prime K125 on the way, they came high up during the usual tests.

Kumho Ecsta HS51 seem to be well regarded and at £50 a corner are cheap enough.

Not sure quite how much "breaking the bank" would be, but Goodyear Efficientgrips would be my choice, been very impressed with them on several cars including a 172 now.

Unless you're way up in Scotland I wouldn't bother with an all season or anything.

That said, I have some Ecsta HS51s on our track car as its road/wet tyres and they're very capable indeed.

I had Goodyear Eagles on my 182 - no issues with tyres, any handling issues were due to tired suspension and a car that just wills you on to try harder smile

opted for the Kumho Ecsta HS51 in the end. Thank you for the input.

Hankooks don't age well. Ours are perishing at the shoulder now. Not a problem if you wear them out within around four years.

I had Yokohamas on the front of my 172, don't remember which ones as it was a few years ago now. Fantastic grip in the dry.

This was on 17s, changed them to 16s (correct size for the car) and put Nankang NS2's on which were nearly as good.
