I replaced the CV boot on my runabout but then lost the holding clamps that come with it! Am needing to get the re-test done tomorrow if I can as I have the day off so was wondering if jubilee clips would be OK for the MOT? Some have even suggested cable ties?

Will jubilee clips/standard hose clips be acceptable for the MOT?

(Or even cable ties?)

Thanks

As long as the boot is secure and not leaking grease out you will be ok

Any of those options would be fine for the MOT, although cable ties might need replacing before long.

You will struggle to get a cable tie tight enough to hold.
The mechanics I use gave me a jubilee clop when I had a similar problem and MOT was no problem.

often there is not room for a jubilee style clamp on an outer CV joint. But if there is, then yes it would be fine.

I've used really strong cable ties many times, also use some light and narrower than usual stainless steel jubilee clips (ebay) which are as good as the standard boot clips for permanent use.

Thanks all, really do appreciate the help.

Car just re-tested and passed, no advisories on the boot or anything biggrin I did indeed use cable ties. Heavy duty plastic ones.

Cost me an hour or so of my time and the boot itself was less than a tenner. Garage had quoted me £150 so am well pleased.

depending on the type of boot, ands cleanliness etc etc, the cables ties are likely to fail to secure the boot properly. It would need to be a very soft pliable boot to stand any chance

It's a fair point, I think I will check things every few weeks. Was in a rush to get the free re-test and the cable ties turned up before the hose clips!

I discovered stainless steel zip ties only last year - they are very handy. It can be a bit tricky getting them really tight but it is possible with a small pair of mole grips & some leverage.

Yes, saw them too and they do look like a very good compromise.

I will admit I struggled badly trying to connect the 'ear' clamps that came with the boot, kept popping off everytime I tried to wrap into place. Oitiker clamps I think they call them. Ended up cutting one shorter and that was it, just would not settle into place.

Oetikers can be a PITA if you haven't got either the proper tool or a suitable set of pincers - I use an old set of carpentry nail pulling ones - to squeeze the tensioning portion.

I've never had an issue with cable ties on boots - incl CV boots - but narrower ones are easier than the wider ones which are a bit too stiff & often just a little too wide.

They are only coppers for several, and can normally be tightened up from the side with normal side cutters with care.

Get some in ready to use, they are easy to do & last forever.
