Hi all,

Bit of a weird one here.

Had a blowout on the motorway on a one month old Pirelli P Zero. It was on my F90 M5 that I'd just picked up, the dealer had fitted a fresh set of Pirellis as part of the prep. The car was recovered to BMW, who supplied and fitted (via National Tyres) a replacement. I sucked this up as bad luck despite not thinking I'd hit anything.

Since the new tyre was fitted I've had an intermittent vibration from the steering wheel. Roads with certain camber/surface highlight it between 30-50mph however it usually becomes apparent as you start to exceed 80mph on *ahem* private roads. I persevered with this for a couple of weeks as it was intermittent and I really just thought it was poor road surfaces etc as I commute during rush hour where it's not apparent.

The BMW dealer I used have National come on site one day a week for any tyre replacements, so to save myself the hassle I had an independent place look at it as I suspected it would just need balanced. They initially said the balance was out and could see some runout when the wheel was spun on their machine. They tried to rebalance but there was still some 'wobble' when the wheel spun so they removed the tyre, re-fitted and re-balanced on their Hunter Roadforce machine before claiming the tyre was deformed and a new tyre would be needed. Wheel was checked for buckles also. They said I should take it up with National who would replace the tyre under warranty so I don't think they were trying to drum up business by advising this.

I raised with BMW almost 2 weeks ago now. Sent them a screenshot of the invoice from the independent tyre fitters advising what they had tried and their findings, and a picture from the Hunter machine. They went to National with this who said the tyre would need sent to Pirelli for inspection and I'd need to pay for a replacement in the interim - they said this could take quite some time and may not be successful if Pirelli deem there's been an impact (I'm almost certain there hasn't been). BMW and National are pushing for me to just authorise a new tyre and await the outcome from Pirelli however I reckon once I do this they'll lose all interest and the whole process will drag out for months where BMW and National aren't at all motivated to resolve. I've been pushing for National to at least take a look before ordering a replacement, as I want them to admit there's an issue incase Pirelli say there isn't or that it's from storage, transport etc.

As a last ditch effort I took it to another local tyre place yesterday who balanced it again on a regular balancing machine, they said the last place had used 'dynamic balancing' which is apparently rubbish. He said the runout wasn't too bad, but I might feel it due to the type of car. It seems slightly better but I can still feel it.

Has anyone who's claimed under tyre warranty before care to share some advice?

ETA: Went on a bit of a rant here. Basically National just want me to pay for a new tyre and send the current one away without doing any investigation work. My point is that if I'd taken it to a National branch to have the tyre fitted and I took it back to them with vibration, they'd need to sort it.

Worked at a tyre company before. It's entirely likely that Pirelli just sold you a duff tyre.

The company you bought the tyre from should just sort it out for you.

Fair enough then, is it normal to pay upfront for the replacement? Cheers

No idea. I wouldn’t. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
