First thing it was only £600

And I've only done 25miles so far, the first hurdle was would it start and take me to work....yes it did and back again.

It's got a steering wheel shake/wobbly in gear sitting around 50mph the it gets a bit worse, I put it into neutral and let it roll for a bit and it wasn't any better.

It could be brakes and it had a brand new set of discs and pads in the boot.

So when I change them how am I going to check the suspension? Breaker bar and see what moves or wobbles?
I will of course look for oil or fluid leaks around the steering rack and suspension.

It's pretty clean, 89k no advisors on the MOT for about 6 years and only been used for local trips by someone I knows wife.

It's a 1.6match(16v?) I'm not looking to set records just had some bad luck with motors and the last 3 have ended up being scrapped.

Any advice or tips gratefully received.

I'm checking filters etc today

Unlikely to be brakes, they are only noticeable under braking. Sounds more like wheel balance to me, although that is usually at a slightly higher speed. Could even be a distorted wheel, bearings or similar.

Wheel balance most likely.

Wheel balance most likely, as mentioned, then your looking at worn dampers and other suspension parts.

Small update, I've currently done nothing to it and even bought the wrong air filter from Halfords...

Today I was sitting at 60 and all was smooth, nobody around so I pushed the clutch down and we had a shake/wobbly through the steering.

I'm thinking it's not out of balance wheels but maybe a gearbox/engine mount, as something feels like it's moving when I depressed the clutch at speed.
The gear shift seems to move a bit, not huge amounts when decelarating.

Try "flooring it" & then coming straight off the throttle when in 3rd/4th at 50/60 with your hand on the gear lever.

If there is lots of movement in the shifter there is likely an engine/gearbox mounting issue.

Thanks, that's it, must be a worn mount or something like that

Front brakes replaced last week, a bit of lube sprayed under the dust seals before pushing the pistons back.

Yesterday was the first day I'd managed to get over 60 mph and no wobble,no shake etc
The old discs were pretty well worn, very rusty and needed a good bash to release from the hub with the pads over half worn.

The discs had a flat surface with no obvious warping

I've not got any better mpg , I was expecting one of the calipers to be seized on.

Even accelerating and backing off doesn't do anything odd, just slows down now, clutch down and at 60+ just smooth , very odd
At least it appears fixed
