Wheel & Tyre Storage
Discussion
I have a wheely big problem - I've got enough sets of wheels to start a F1 Team.
I've been paying for a container to store them all in, but I'd rather save the money:- I built a shed to fill with them, which very quickly filled with the rest of the things in the house that should be in a shed
The Garage is full of Tools and a Triumph Spitfire, so that one's out as well at the moment...
Pending a clearout, I have been wondering if there's a nice storage box option I could setup in the garden.
There are 6 Sets - The max size (Which I'm using for calculations) is 255x35R20:- So a diameter of 27" (686mm), and width of 10" (255mm) (Or stack height of 1020mm)
I've looked at "low profile" garden storage boxes, but it's difficult to find anything that fits them without being way oversized to the point of "Get another shed"
So the question is: Does anyone have any suggestions / experience with storing mountains of tyres and wheels?
A garden storage box of suitable, but not over-size?
Racking that I could squeeze into the (BIG!) shed that isn't absurdly expensive?
Twin-axle adapters so I can get more use out of them?

Do you actually have space for them in the shed? How many wheels are you talking about? Do you have ample land available to store them outside the shed?
About 6 sets (!)There's the rest of the garden available - A reasonable amount of space, but London suburb - No countryside acres!; With some reorganisation I think I could get 2 - 3 sets in the shed with some normal racking

Wow, that's quite the collection. I imagine your best bet would be to stack as many as you have height for under cover. If you need to leave some outside then temperature variations are going to be your worst problem. Covered with groundsheet to keep them dry with an air gap to a panel on top to act as a heat barrier would probably be a reasonable option. That is if you do actually need to keep them all.Make your own racks from Uni-strut.
Not overly expensive, easy and sturdy
Quite easy for wall mounting
Or lots of places sell the modular racking found in most commercial places for not too unreasonable prices. Can be found second hand too
eg

Or Unistrut, done very simply. I've actually covered the same length to the left too ( not yet done in photo )
Also gives a slightly flatter surface for the tyre to rest on to spread the load a little so it leaves less of an indent in the tyres over time

When I had a track day car I had 3 sets stored out of the way in the garage.
1st set was held to the roof joists on lengths of threaded bar fixed to the roof and the wheel held in place with large washers made of wood and screwed on with wing nuts.
2nd set was down one side just under the roof held up on rope attached to large hooks.
3rd set was the same down the other side.
As a consequence they actually took up no space at all.
ETA.
Found a pic of one hanging up there, there is easily enough space for 2 sets if not 3 down each side of the garage without compromising car space significantly.
