I’ve been using the same garage for four years to change tyres on my wheels, without issue.

This year when I got a set of tyres moved from one set of wheels to another set, all eight wheels were marked by the gripping jaws of the ‘wheel machine’.

When I challenged the garage, they explained that they had got a new machine and that new tyre machines now have metal jaws, their last one had rubber covering the jaws and protecting the wheels.

Has the garage purchased a ‘cheap’ machine or are all machines direct metal jaw on metal wheel contact these days?

I don't think I've ever seen a machine that did not have metal jaws.

Even googling they all seem metal, although some seem to offer plastic protective covers.

At least they have admitted liability.

Pin gripping marks inside the barrel, or clamp marks on the outside of the rim?

The marks are clamp marks on the inside of the rim.
