Summer/Winter tyres on the same axle?
Discussion
Hello, I am new to your forum and am looking to find out legally if a summer and directional winter tyre can be put on the same axel in the UK. Common sence says that it is a bad idea but I need to know what the law says. If anybody can reference a legal, maybe MOT statute or rule I would be very greatfull.
AFAIK it is ill-advised but not illegal; I did something similar last year when I got a puncture and I used one of my winter wheels with an all season for a few days until my new tyres were delivered. MOT rules on tyres below:

Only time you might come unstuck is if you have an accident and the different tyres are attributed as a root cause.

Last week discovered a flat tyre on the osr of our Forester, its on 6 month old all seasons, slipped one of the as yet unsold winter set on the car to pop the flat down to the tyre bay 1 mile away.
On the way the car did feel different, turning right at the mini roundabout and right into the tyre shop you could feel the diffs complaining and one of the offside tyres was sqeaking in complaint.
Stood side by side the ageing winters are slightly smaller maybe 1/4" in height, but it just goes to show how important it is having the same tyres if poss on the drive axles at least.
Makes one wonder if a car was driven long distances with mismatched tyres how much damage could be inflicted on diffs, especially LSDs of which i'm fairly certain the Foz has at the rear, which would make the squeaking tyre all the more likely.
