Hello,

I’ve owned my 2019 Leon Cupra 290 for a few months.

It came with mismatched budget tyres on the front — one of them brand new — and fairly fresh PS4S’ on the rear. Unfortunately, a staple went through one of those good ones a few weeks ago, so I replaced it like-for-like.

The car was just serviced and I was told the NSF inner tread is close to the legal limit. I’m not too upset, as it gives me an excuse to put something better on! I’ll also be getting the alignment sorted, since it was clearly neglected at the last fitment.

If it were spring or summer, I’d be inclined to match all four tyres with PS4S’.

But going into the colder, greasier winter months, I’m wondering whether UUHP tyres are a bit wasted on a FWD hot hatch known for axle tramp. I’m tempted to try Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 6s up front for the quieter ride, better wear and improved cold-weather performance — though that would leave me with a mismatched set…

I’m based in Bristol, so I don’t use all-seasons or winter tyres, and I don’t expect to push the car hard over winter — it’ll mostly stay in Comfort mode.

Any advice hugely appreciated

Although a pair on the front & different pair on the rear isn't the best idea (especially if one is pretty "single purpose" like the PS4S) there are worse tyre mixes to have (like you have now for instance) and you will likely be OK.

Personally, I would prefer the Assy 6s all round, but that is me.

Going back to what you say about alignment, replacing tyres shouldn't need the alignment to be changed as it will not be affected by different tyres.

That is not to say you don't have an alignment issue, do you have symptoms of any alignment issues?

Yeah I’d say the alignment somewhere is wrong because the outer edge of the tyre isn’t near the wear marker but the inner edge is worn down to it. I can’t see entirely but the mechanic said chords nearly on the RHS!

Thanks for your advice. Very conflicted about what to run on it. I probably won’t put PS4S on it again if I don’t do it now.

I ran Michelin Supersports front and rear on my 2014 Leon Cupra DSG 280 (Stage 2+ at 420ps), remember leaving the office one Sunday morning at 6am after it had snowed overnight. Took me about 20 minutes extra to get home but the car was fine, did spin up a little bit but just adjusted my driving.

I had previously run Supersports on my 2010 Leon Cupra R manual that was about 370ps, and driven all winter on them.

Obviously proper winter tyres would of been a lot better but "summer tyres" were OK.
